Chapter One
For all the things I've told myself: You are a stellar detective; you may be one of the boys, but you're still a lady; I don't care what my family thinks about my life…Nothing has been more important than this: Do not fall in love with Maura Isles.
Things we tell ourselves are usually easy to believe and difficult to practice. Because no matter how hard I work, sometimes I feel like it's not enough. No matter how many dates I go on, I can't seem to keep a guy. No matter how much I complain I do every single thing my mother asks me to do. And no matter how hard I try to reconcile my feelings, I am, I have, fallen in love with Maura Isles.
There is one thing, however, that I both tell myself and that's effortless to believe: Maura Isles does not love me back. Well, she loves me, but certainly not in the all consuming, up at night, burning passion type of way I'm talking about.
For all I know, I had no clue how I'd react when Maura started dating someone exclusively. I had a theory—a hypothesis, as she would put it—but I still had no clue. For all I know, I had no idea it would rip me to shreds when I realized that the string of dates she'd been on was with the same person. I was totally clueless to how it would eviscerate my very soul to imagine someone kissing, holding and making love to Maura through the night.
"Okay, Jane, before Reggie gets here I want to just…warn you."
"Warn me? How bad can this guy be? I've met your…eclectic taste in men before, I'm sure this will be no different."
"That's just it. This is different than before. Reggie means something to me."
Nearly a lifetime sitting in interrogation rooms training my facial features to reflect detachment instead of unbridled contempt helped at that moment.
"I know, Maur. That's why we're having this dinner, right?"
"Yes, but…" Maura's face was the most adorable picture of consternation. "When Reggie gets here I want you to have an open mind. Just try to—"
The doorbell ended Maura's plea and she turned urgent eyes toward me.
"I'll be on my best behavior, Maura. I promise."
With one last grateful smile Maura moved to open the door.
But for all I know, I was even less prepared when a woman walked in, one arm possessively around Maura's waste the other outstretched to greet me.
