Running in Heels
Prologue
Lavender Brown, twenty, hadn't had a proper job since leaving Hogwarts two years ago. She went back home to live with her parents and hadn't looked for a job since. Her parents had asked her about getting a job since she moved in, sure they loved having their daughter back living with them full time but she never did anything. Well, that's not true. She went out with her friends after they had finished work, went out drinking away money she borrowed from her parents and spending money she didn't have. She never had to earn anything, her parents paid for everything, clothes, shoes, trips, food -you name it- they paid for it. She never did anything about having no job. When her friends were working she was recovering from a hangover or deciding what she was going to wear that night or the next time she was going out with her friends.
Her parents were sick of her partying and staying out all night, her father especially, he hated the fact that his only daughter was wasting her life, not putting anything towards having her own place. She was no closer to being married than she was at thirteen. She wanted everything handed to her and, being her father, he was expected to be the one handing them over. He worked high up in the Ministry and her mother owned a clothing store, they both tried to get her jobs, constantly offering to let her work at the store or get her a job at the Daily Prophet. Lavender always refused, telling them that she didn't need a job to get by. She was fine just as she was.
Lavender didn't see the problem. She liked living with her parents, not having to worry about bills or rent. She saw herself as too young to get tied down to one guy. She sure as hell didn't want any kids, all of the screaming and puking, no thanks. She wanted her life to stay the way it was, no husbands, kids and certainly no jobs.
Her friends wanted her to have her own life, pestering her on their many nights out. When they didn't want to go out, having an important day at work the next day, Lavender slagged them off, calling them stuck up and suck ups. They asked her to get a job, move out from her parents' house and grow up. The subject caused a lot of fights between friends, more so between Lavender and Parvati Patil, Lavender's best friend since first year of Hogwarts. She constantly told Lavender that she could get her a job and she could move in to her two-bed apartment in Diagon Alley. Parvati worked for Witch Weekly, Lavender's favourite magazine but nothing could get Lavender to take a job, not with the way her life was at the time.
Her father had given up on asking Lavender to get a job. After two years of talking, he had given up and decided it was time for action. He had gotten in touch with the head of the Law department, finding out that they needed a new assistant, their original had quit suddenly, moving to Las Vegas to work on a crabs table. The job paid reasonably well, the hours were ten till five, the work wasn't too hard and her father could check up on her to make sure that everything was okay. He had accepted the job on Lavender's account, promising that she would be in the office at ten on Monday morning.
