Before The Storm

A little mermaid swims to the surface

Her red hair floats around her as she watches a ship in captivity

The men aboard shoot fireworks into the dark blue sky

They burst amongst the stars, and fall into dust over the ocean

A smile spreads across her face as she begins to swim closer

She needs to see the forbidden creatures...

Her shimmering green tail splashes against the water

A storm is brewing far away...

She reaches the ship and stretches her frail hands out, grabs hold of the wood

In her chest her heart is pounding

She pulls herself up and her eyes widen as she sits

Humans are dancing, talking, and laughing before her

As she watches them with such interest, a certain one catches her eye

The one playing the snarfblat...

His tanned skin and dark eyes

His beauty and charisma have stolen her heart

An eternity passed...

She loved him before the storm

For this man she would shed her emerald tail

Watch it bubble, and split into two slender legs

For his warmth she would surrender her voice

Feel it creep up her throat and echo in the air, to be locked in a glowing seashell

For his love she would cast away the ocean

And walk across the burning sands...

Suddenly thunder rumbles across the sky

Heavy winds pick up and play with the waves

"Storm's a comin'!"

Chaos spreads on the deck

Men rush to the wheel, heed to the sails

The winds throw the mermaid back into the rough sea

But she will not return home

She swims against the current, breaking the surface

The men begin to abandon their ship

But the prince remains, desperately searching for his dog

Lightning flashes over the ship, a crackling sound erupts through the sky

The sails are set ablaze, quickly burning into rags

The men call to the prince, warning him of the danger

He scoops his dog up and rushes towards the edge, but his foot is caught in a hole

The dog is thrown into the harsh waves, but swims to safety

The men help him into their boats, but they will not paddle away without their prince

He is caught on the ship, tugging at his foot

Suddenly the sails crash into the deck, setting fire to everything

His eyes fill with fear as he sees the dynamite beside him

He knows death is waiting

The barrel is covered with flames, and explodes in a flash

The prince is thrown into the ocean, and his men madly try to save him

But his arms slip from their grip, and he sinks deeply beneath the waves

The little mermaid dives after him, her heart racing as she swims faster and faster

She reaches him and wraps her arms around his chest

His warmth is still there...

With all of her strength she pulls him to the surface, and swims through the storm

When they reach the shore, she lovingly lays him on the warm sand

Her breath catches in her chest as she strokes the hair from his face

He's so beautiful...

The waves lap at his bare feet, and her tail curls up

She sings sweetly to him, her voice bringing him back to life

He's breathing...

As she smiles, she hears another human call his name

She can't bear to leave him, but she knows they will meet again

Before the man can see her, she dashes back into the sea

He stands up and runs after her

His eyes scan over the ocean, but there is not sight of his beautiful rescuer

Was it a dream?

The little mermaid secretly watches as he is helped back to the castle

She leans against the rocks, feeling the sky and land and sea rushing through her soul

I don't know when

I don't know how

But I know something's starting right now

Watch and you'll see

Someday I'll be

Part of your world

The waves splash against the rocks as she raises her voice to the clouds

We'll meet again someday...
