-1This came to me the other day as I was driving and thinking about Stargate: Continuum. I think I have a very weird mind g.
New York, 1965
"So, what are you going to call him?"
Melburn Jackson looked away from his newborn son at the speaker. "I don't know, Dad. Claire and I haven't decided on anything definite yet. Do you have any suggestions?"
"Daniel. Call him Daniel." Seventy-six year-old Cameron Jackson, formerly Cameron Mitchell, looked down at the baby, who was sleeping peacefully, only a few hours old. When he had gone back in time to 1929, the last thing he had expected was to fall in love with the woman who turned out to be Doctor Jackson's grandmother. He hadn't realised it until too late, when his son had been born back in 1934 and Alice had named him Melburn. Cam had wanted to run away because he didn't want to be Daniel's grandfather - the whole thing was too weird for words. But he didn't. He had stayed, raised Melburn to be an archaeologist even knowing that in eight years time, tragedy would make Daniel an orphan.
He didn't think he had been Daniel's grandfather in the original timeline although he couldn't be sure, and he had never seen any reference to the man back in the future. But ever since he had fallen in love with Alice, he'd had a duty to make sure that things turned out the way they were supposed to and that meant not warning Melburn and Claire about that coverstone, and letting Daniel grow up in foster homes. Besides, he knew that only one of Daniel's grandparents survived past 1973, so his time on Earth was limited.
"Daniel," Melburn echoed, looking down again at his son. "I like it and I'm sure Claire will too. What made you think of it?"
"Just someone I knew once," Cam replied off-handedly. The last nearly forty years had been very difficult without any of his friends or without being able to do anything that he was good at, like flying planes. He had been too old for the Air Force and instead had to find all sorts of jobs, which didn't fulfil him the same way being a pilot and exploring other planets did. But he had survived long enough to see Daniel born, which was what he had intended. "He was a brilliant and special man, with a gift for languages, and I think your boy is going to turn out just like him."
Melburn looked confused. "How do you know that?"
Cam smiled at the joke he couldn't share with his son. "Just trust me, Mel. Just trust me."
