Rafters.
When most people think 'rafters', they think of the beams holding the roof up.
When I think 'Rafters' I think of the loud, noisy, loving family I belong to.
My name is Melissa Bannon and I married Benjamin Rafter.
With that I got amazing, supportive, loving parents in law, Dave and Julie.
I got two amazing sisters in law, Rachel and Sammy.
I got Nathan for a brother in law.
Ted is Ben's grandfather, whom we all love dearly.
I got Chel, Dave's mother who appeared out of the blue- but we love her anyway.
And Ben.
The greatest guy in the world, the person who I love more than anyone. He's one of a kind, Ben Rafter.
My father didn't like him.
My mother thought he was an okay sort of guy.
My brother Dermott thought he was pretty cool.
My other brother lives in London and I haven't had any contact with him in years. He doesn't count.
We got married. In a teeny tiny ceremony (fifteen people) in the park. Sammy and Rachel were my unofficial bridesmaids, and Carbo was our best man.
It was a perfect wedding.
Then the wedding reception, held at the Calamari Castle, which is what Rachel lovingly refers the house Carbo, Ben and I share to.
In a way, it was Nathan's and Sammy's wedding reception, too. The two of them never got a wedding reception.
We didn't mind.
Rafters are sharing people.
After half a perfect honeymoon, we drove five hundred kilometres in the pitch black, to make sure Ben's mother was okay.
She was, thank God.
It didn't even dampen it.
Because our family was safe and that's all that matters with us.
One day, Ben and I will move out of Carbo's place, to a place of our own.
But I know we'll never be far.
At the moment we're right next door.
Always there in case of an emergency.
But that's what matters.
Family.
I am a Rafter.
And for once I know for sure.
That's where I belong.
