Caroline sat at the table, in her fine London home. Across from her sat her uncle, who was reading some paper whilst he ate. It had been almost a year since she left Cornwall and just like she had promised, she had not returned.

"Ah," Her uncle suddenly spoke up. "This interesting news indeed."

"What is, Uncle?" Caroline inquired politely.

"Dr Enys has discovered a cure that has been ailing the fisher folk," Her uncle answered.

Caroline looked down at her plate. She wished she could say she had not thought of him since she had left. But she had. Every day in fact.

"That is surely good news, is it not, Uncle," Caroline forced herself to smile as she looked up, but she needn't have bothered, as he uncle was still engrossed in his papers.

"Indeed," he answered. "And to think if he had not been cleared of those charges, he would not have been free to do so."

"What charges?" Caroline asked.

"The night before you returned to London, he was arrested," Her uncle hardly looked up from his papers. "He was accused of helping the smugglers. It was concluded the following morning that his reason for being on those cliffs at the time, was in fact true and he was released without charge."

"And what was his reason for being there?" Caroline tried to sound uninterested, but her heart was pounding in her chest.

"He'd been summoned to one of the fisher villages after a young women fell ill," Her uncle told her. "He claimed he would have passed over those cliffs hours earlier if had he not been assaulted upon his return to his mount."

"He was assaulted?" Caroline gasped, unable to hide her true feelings on the matter.

"Yes," Her uncle nodded. "He was treated by the villages to the best of their ability and once he was able to stand once more, he returned to his horse and began to ride back. But as it grew darker he lit a lantern and later accidentally dropped it, as he passed out in the saddle. When he regained consciousness, he tried to put out the fire, as it had alerted the smugglers to ambush which had been set by the soldiers. Only to be knocked out by a soldier from behind, who thought he was aiding the smugglers. He was released the following morning, after witnesses confirmed his story from the fisher village."

Caroline stared down at her plate once more. He'd been riding back to meet her even though he'd injured… She had received word Dr Enys had stopped by and picked up the letter the following morning. After he'd been released, he must have ridden straight there in order to try and explain!

Once what Caroline deemed was a suitable amount of time had passed, she spoke up once more.

"Uncle," She began. "If it isn't too much trouble, I wish to accompany you back to Cornwall when you leave. I find I miss the country air."
