Innocence
There were times when Kurenai wished she wasn't a shinobi. There were times when she wished that she didn't have to lead a squad of genin, and watch them suffer when they made their first kill or any kill. Especially during times of war.
Perched upon a branch, Kurenai spied her team, playing together. She saw Kiba running and laughing with Akamaru, Hinata giggling when Kiba tripped and fell onto his bottom, and Shino calmly watching them all.
Kurenai smiled at their childish antics. Even shinobi can have fun sometimes. They were just children after all, although too many people forget that. It was amazing how innocent they looked though, not the least like the shinobi they were.
Kurenai didn't even notice when Kakashi saw her, jumped and landed neatly on the branch beside her, holding an ever-present Ichya Ichya Paradise. "Lost in thought?"
"Just thinking about the difficulties of being a shinobi."
"Would you quit?"
"W-what?"
Yes, Kurenai may wish she wasn't a shinobi, but when it came down to it, she wouldn't trade it for anything else. Would she?
"Heh. Take some time to think about it. And take it easy." With that, Kakashi jumped off the branch. Before he disappeared, Kurenai could have sworn he said, "It happens to all of us."
Sighing, Kurenai turned back to the three children. She should tell them about the upcoming war, she really should. They were all respectable shinobi, after all, and were expected to perform such service for their village. But right now, she'll let them be children for just a little bit longer.
