E/O Drabble Challenge, words: inflamed and spasm.
Summary: Hunting is more than knowing the prey and the right weapon – it's about learning from mistakes before they kill you or the ones you're bound to protect. Set before season 1.
A/N: Thanks for the inspiring words :-) I figured I have a hundred words left from last week - so it's 200 words on the dot. Go hunt them down.
They had tracked the creature all night and day, and Dean could feel John's tension grow as twilight set in. Still not a single word, just that look in his father's eyes, a silence that inflamed a hellfire of unspoken self-accusations in his mind. He shouldn't have been drinking on a hunt, no matter how much he missed Sammy, no matter how mad he might've been at Dad. When the moment came, he'd been just a millisecond too slow, missed the heart, left a monster running through the night, crazy with fury. A monster that might kill people in this very moment – or worse.
Both men froze when they heard the whimper.
Behind the dark silhouettes of trees water was running. And there, at a small creek, lay the creature, spasms of pain rippling over its silvery fur like waves. It sensed the hunters, lifting its head, and its dark eyes were eerily calm, almost pleading.
John drew his weapon, but Dean beat him, sending the silver bullet right through its heart.
He turned away, when the cadaver morphed back into the Teenager who'd been bitten a few months ago, shivering, until he felt Dad's leather jacket over his shoulders.
