"Yoho, yoho, a pirates life for me!"

Lois giggled drunkenly when her shoe fell off as she stumbled around her apartment.

"Whoopsies!" She kicked off the other shoe and collapsed onto the couch. The silliness disappeared, and Lois hugged her knees sadly.

"Stupid heart. You always choose the creeps, Lois. Why? Why can't I have one good guy in my life? The rest have torn my heart to bit, chewed it up, and spat it out. I need a superman to sweep me off my feet. Someone to protect me, stop me from falling over the edge." Lois let her heartbroken sobs overtake her lonely mutterings.

Finally drying her eyes, Lois pulled herself off the couch and into her room. Searching through the closet, she felt around for the familiar softness of the stolen flannel shirt. Pulling in on, she grabbed an Advil, a glass of water and her bunny slippers. Climbing onto the window sill, she settled in, watching the stars, feeling like she knew them personally.

"Great, Lois, now you're going even more insane. There's no such thing as aliens, stupid. Of course you don't know one….duh."

Climbing back down, Lois yawned and looked around for her iPod. She spotted its black case on the kitchen island. Snatching it up, Lois re-crossed the apartment, heading back to the window sill. Untangling the wires, she popped the earbuds into place and searched for her favourite song. Humming along, she closed her eyes and let the music sink in.

'Deep breath in….and out…..in….out…peace in, negativity out…love, in, hate out…..come on, Lois! Just calm down, for god's sake.' Even her thoughts were against her, now.

Her eyelids grew heavier, and one part of the song played over and over in her mind.

I never thought you could break me apart,
I keep a sinister smile
And a hole in my heart.

She leaned against the screen, drifting in and out of consciousness. Slowly, all of her weight shifter to the screen. Eventually, it buckled, stretching to accommodate the dead weight of a sleeping Lois.

A large, jarring crack woke Lois. She yelped as she flew out the window, her heart racing, arms wind milling, attempting to grab onto something .

Time seemed to slow as she fell, and she heard a voice, a memory, a friend.

"There are times when I don't think you know me at all…and others when I think you know me better than anyone."

"SMALLVILLE!" she screamed.

There was a sudden jolt, and she stopped falling.

'Oh, god, I'm dead, aren't I??'

"Are you okay, Miss Lane?" Lois' eyes fluttered open, and she gaped at the man.

"Superman!?"

He grinned at her.

She frowned.

"When I said I needed a superman to sweep me off my feet, I didn't men it literally!"
