Mello stared on, incapable of looking away.
The more he tried to distract his attention, the more he focused upon him.
To anyone else who could have been in the room, Mello would simply look like he was staring off into space, thinking deeply. It was just the opposite. He was most definitely not staring off into space.
The object of his unwavering stare was his best friend, Matt, although he refused to admit it to himself. He told himself he really was staring off into space, and nothing more. He pushed the thought that he could possibly be attracted to his friend to the back of his mind, still staring seemingly blankly at Matt.
Luckily for Mello, Matt's eyes, glued to his PSP, never moved for a second to check on him, and Mello knew it. Mello's eyes, however, scanned completely over Matt's figure, which laid across the arms of the armchair. Matt's head was thrown back over an arm, staring up at the PSP which his slender fingers held so carefully. Mello stared at Matt's hands, then shut his eyes tight.
He wouldn't let himself think what he thought. He couldn't handle it if he did.
"Mello?"
Matt's voice filled the air and drifted towards Mello's ears. His eyes snapped open and a blush dusted his cheeks as he realized exactly the depth of what he had been thinking.
"Are you okay?" Matt asked, turning to sit on the armchair and setting his PSP down on the end table next to it. Mello quickly nodded his head jerkily.
"Just fine."
Matt rose from his seat and brought a hand to his own chin, studying his companion.
"Sure? Cuz you looked pretty angry there. Pretty…" Matt walked closer to Mello and smirked. "Flustered."
Mello looked indignant. "What the Hell are you talking about? I don't look flustered!"
Matt came even closer.
"Really? Because it seems any time I get closer, your face just gets redder, and redder…" Matt was only inches away from Mello now. "And redder."
Mello still wanted to deny it, but he found he couldn't speak. Plus, he knew he couldn't deny it, because his face was so hot, it felt like someone had cranked the heater up. He merely stood stock-still, unable to move from his current position.
Matt continued to smirk before he whispered, "I saw you staring at me, Mel. Ever hear of peripheral vision?"
Mello thought, if his face wasn't as red as it could get before, it had to be now. He still couldn't speak.
"Well, honestly, it's nothing to be ashamed of. I've found myself staring at you more times than not," Matt confessed coolly, leaning in closer. "Except," he began, closing his eyes before he made the complete movement, "I don't try to deny it."
Mello found he could hardly breathe, and then Matt pressed his lips against his. Part of Mello wanted to struggle, and did a little, but Matt just wrapped his arms around him and wouldn't let him go. Eventually, Mello just gave in and kissed back before Matt pulled away, smirking at him. Matt chuckled.
"I knew I was right," he said, winking at Mello before returning to his video game.
Mello just stood and touched at his lips. Perhaps he didn't have to deny it after all.
