Frogs, Snails and Puppies' Dogs Tails

The day was beautiful. Spring was in full bloom; the air was sweet and blowing lightly. It was the kind of day that any chores that needed to be done inside, just had to wait. The waste of such a wonderful day would have been a tragedy.

Alexander and Hephaestion had taken the puppies and headed out into the glorious sunlight. The glen they had found was full of blooming flowers of every color and shape. Green had replaced the drab hues of winter. New life was springing up all over.

All four of them had begun romping and rolling in the green grasses and blossoms. The puppies never ending energy seemed endless, spring fever had only added to their normally high energy levels. Hephaestion was the first to stop and watch as the rest rolled and scampered farther into the glen. He sat with his forearms resting on his knees and laughed at the scene in front of him.

Bundles of yellow and brown dashed in and out around the golden haired man, sneaking in to attack and backing away before his hands could grab them. One would assault him from the front while the other would approach from the rear. They were their own perfect little army, one Alexander himself could be proud of.

The rolling had led them to a little bog in lowest point in the glen. Both Alexander and his matching yellow counterpart rolled on in the gooey mess, not even noticing how muddy they were getting. The brown furry ball of fun stopped and sat a little distance away from the now muddy pair. His little pink tongue hung out of his mouth from all the romping and playing. He turned to see his other master up the hill a ways and ran to sit by his side.

After having his head and belly scratched for a while, he sat next to Hephaestion with one of his little paws resting on Hephaestion's thigh.

The two below were now covered from head to toe in mud. They were both on all fours chasing a frog. The frog would let them get close and then hop away again. Attached to the back of Alexanders'chiton was several snails.

"I suppose we could go help them." He said to the puppy beside him.

The puppy looked at him and slanted his head to the side as he spoke. Big brown eyes blinked a couple of times before the puppy got up and circled a couple of times before he sat down beside Hephaestion again with his soft head on his lap.

"You're right, why spoil all of their fun." Hephaestion said as he leaned back and stretched out with his hands behind his head.

Two sets of eyes drifted shut on the top hill, as the two 'little boys' at the bottom of the hill continued their attack on the frogs and snails.

If Alexander had had a tail, it would have been wagging as much as the little soldier beside him.

"We'll go clean up the mess when they wear down." Hephaestion said, as he brought a hand down to scratch the little head again. "No sense in all of us getting dirty."
