Tamaki is a lot of things. Dense? Yes. Annoying? Absolutely. But heartless? Not even close.
Sure, it kills him inside to see the two grow closer with every passing day, but to see her happiness? It's worth it all.
Nobody saw it coming, least of all the two themselves. But if Tamaki had to be honest with himself, he saw it before everyone. The longing glances filled with need and want; he saw it all.
Maybe that's what really hurt him the most.
The fact that he saw it but refused to believe it as anything but a...'mother/daughter' thing. Anything along those lines. Anything other than what they really meant. If he had taken it all seriously, maybe he could've done something to stop it.
And another thing that hurt is how perfect they are for each other. Both very intelligent and both strive to make their dreams come true. They're both a little more in touch with reality then the other hosts. And it's not a secret that they both struggle with showing affection and how much they care.
But standing next to that traitor and watching him marry the girl Tamaki loves...it didn't really matter all that much. All that mattered was that he was too late.
When they first started going out Tamaki thought, "Oh there's no way they'll last; it'll be okay."
And then when he told Tamaki he was going to propose? "It'll be fine; his father won't allow that."
But he was wrong.
With both of their fathers' blessing, they became engaged. And now here they are.
"Tamaki?" Turning around from the edge of the balcony, he feels his heart clench.
She finally let her hair grow out past her shoulders and at a young age of 23, she makes a beautiful bride. Putting a fake smile on, that she surely sees through, he says, "Haruhi, shouldn't you be inside with your husband? And you've got guests to entertain; surely the Host Club taught you how to do that." He laughs uncertainly but she remains passive.
"Why don't you come inside? The best man shouldn't be spending the evening out here by himself."
He stays rooted to the spot; should he tell her? About his feelings for her that have always been there, and only grow stronger by the day?
But then he does the mistake of looking her straight in the eyes. He sees them twinkle with joy and mirth.
No, she's happy and he can't change that, especially on this day of all days. He plasters the fake smile back on and tucks her arm in the the crook of his own, "Come along Mrs. Ohtori, you mustn't keep your husband waiting."
Yes, Tamaki is a lot of things. Now you can add heartbroken to that list.
