"Would you ever kill a teammate?"
These words, spoken by Doctor Erksine, was part of his test to determine whether you would fit Project Rebirth. You answered as you always did,
"I don't want to kill anybody. I hate bullies."
Only later, after seeing the good Doctor dead and the HYDRA agent foaming at the mouth from a cyanide pill, you recalled that moment.
And it bothered you.
You saw Bucky fall from the train, saw your childhood friend and fellow soldier die.
You saw as the handle broke, heard him screaming on the way down.
Erksine's words echoed in the depths of your mind.
"I just killed my teammate and friend," you thought, as you hung there, crying.
And it bothered you.
You thought about Erksine's words as you plummeted from the sky in that airplane.
And it's bother-
You meet your team, meet her, the Black Widow. You fight together with them at the Battle of New York.
You see Stark, the man you were so wrong about, see him fly into the hole with a nuke. You see that he's not a selfish bastard, he's a teammate.
You don't realize, until later, when he's awakened by the Hulk, that...
it bothered you.
You get acquainted with the new world, that has moved on without you. You see that you're a relic, like your father's rusty 1911 pistol, that they sent home with the US Flag, that you shined up and used again.
You are a museum exhibit, your life has been organized into neat little points that, in your mind, aren't very neat at all. Your Smithsonian exhibit is too neat for what you've lived in. The blood of the men you lost are still on your hands.
But she's there, the Black Widow, and she'll cheer you up and try to set you up with girls, like Bucky.
Sometimes you see HIM when she's around.
And it bothered you.
You see her at the hospital. You see him die out on the table, the man whom you had answered to for the last couple months.
Natasha asks you what he was doing in your apartment.
"You're a bad liar," she says, as she walks away. And it bothered you.
You see your teammates, the men you trusted, in that elevator.
The elevator stops, and Natasha walks in.
She holds up the flash drive, "Looking for this, Captain?"
And it bothered you.
You take down your STRIKE Team, leaving only her.
"I just want you to know, Steve, this isn't personal," she says, activating her Widow's Bites.
You fight her, and in the back of your mind, you see Bucky, falling from that train. You catch her in a headlock, and say, "It kind of feels personal."
You snap her neck, and can't help but see Bucky as her lifeless body slumps to the ground.
You just killed your best friend, and you realize as you jump out of that elevator-
that it bothered you.
Hill finds you before SHIELD does. You destroy HYDRA together with Fury and Hill.
You have no compassion for the new Bucky. Bucky died on that train in 1944, the new Bucky's an enemy, someone that HYDRA's trying to use against you.
When he's stuck under the support beam of the Helicarrier, you find his pistol on the ground, as shoot him in the head, just like they trained you in Basic training.
You walk over and close his eyelids. As you jump out of the Helicarrier into the Potomac, you realize-
that moment would bother you for the rest of your life.
Author's note: this fanfic was based on another fanfic "Bothered you" by Rulin. He is an excellent writer, and if you have ever played any of the Phoenix Wright games, I highly encourage you check it out.
