Matt was an odd person. He was no stranger to having people stop, stare, and point at him as if he was some rare and exotic creature that they had never seen before. He just couldn't blend in with a crowd. His clothing attracts too much attention.

Society judges him as an outcast; an anomaly that is too strange to live and too rare to die(*). Due to unfortunate circumstances, the world didn't want him so he was forced to a new world: Whammy's House.

But he couldn't even blend in with his own intellectual peers at Whammy's House. Everyone tried so hard to be the best. They all wanted to be Number 1 but they just weren't smart enough. Matt, on the other hand, just didn't care. He knew he could beat Near and the smartest and everyone knew the same as well.

They were envious of him for that but because he didn't care to even try when they were the ones trying their hardest, they started to hate him. He was an outcast among his own peers.

But Matt didn't care about that either. His love for videogames and cigarettes trumped over all. Why should he care about the worlds that made him a pariah when he could explore many other worlds? He was the hero in his worlds and they all loved him. Well, most of them did. But the point is that he and his worlds were all that counted.

He was satisfied with what he had until Mello came along.

Mello was the first person to accept that social outcast and join him. Mello was a social butterfly and associated with anyone and everyone but Matt knew that by associating with him, Mello was also isolating himself from the rest. To this day, Matt never understood why he did that.

All he knew was that once Mello entered Matt's forbidden kingdom, he would never be the same.

He wasn't lonely for he always found solace and companionship in his videogames but Mello was the human contact that he never knew he needed.

Mello showed him things about himself and the world that he never would have known. He taught him how valuable friendship is and how amazing life could be outside the world of Mario and Kingdom of Hearts.

Sure they always somehow ended up in trouble but it was all worth it. All those countless hours that they spent together really did a number on him. He knew that he would never be the same but he didn't know to what extent.

When L died and Mello left him alone at Whammy's, Matt was devastated. All those years having Mello there with him were suddenly gone and Matt was alone.

This time all the videogames in the world could never fill the Mello-shaped void in his heart. That is why he left as well and went after Mello. He searched for so long and he, for once, was thankful for being a genius. He used those skills to find and track down Mello and once they were reunited, he gave that bastard just what he deserved.

He grabbed Mello and kissed him like it was their last day on earth. He poured his soul through that kiss, and despite his doubts and his open wounds Matt was rewarded when Mello returned his affections.

Now Matt had three loves in his life, and he couldn't be happier about that.
