The two combatants circled around each other on the barren, rocky plain during the last battle of the Last Great Ninja War (though no one knew it was to be the last). One was Sakura Haruno, the greatest medical ninja of her generation (A/N-C'mon you KNOW it's true). The other was Sasuke Uchiha, rogue ninja and heir to the great Uchiha ninja clan. While staring at each other the combatants felt many things-anger, disappointment, love. Yes, love, for they had once been team mates and perhaps they had once wished for something more. Alas, it was not to be. Only one would survive this confrontation.
"Give up, Sasuke. Just give up and come home. I don't want to hurt you!"
"That is why you will lose!" Sasuke declared. He stopped. "Where's Kakashi?"
Sakura blinked. "Kakashi? He's leading the troops. What about him?"
"Don't lie. I know he's close. I sense his chakra."
Sakura blushed. "Our chakras are mixed at the moment."
Sasuke blinked and his mouth fell open as he realized the implications of this statement. "YOU'RE FUCKING KAKASHI?!"
Sakura sighed. "That's such a crass word, Sasuke. Me and Hatake-kun made love before the battle."
"HATAKE-KUN?!"
"Well, it's a little weird to call him Kakashi when we see each other naked so much."
"HE'S OLD ENOUGH TO BE YOUR FATHER!"
"Well, he does spank me when I've been bad. Which is a lot." She started giggling.
"I THOUGHT YOU WERE IN LOVE WITH ME!"
She shrugged. "Sasuke, I waited forever for you to return my feelings. You never did."
"I-I…HE'S…HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?!" A vein had appeared on his forehead and was throbbing. Sakura was becoming alarmed.
"Easy there, Sasuke. I didn't even realize you cared this much. I guess this started about a year ago now. He was my shoulder to cry on when you left-remember Sasuke you left me-and I had feelings for him, but I ignored them. Then, the older I got the more he was there for me. How could I not fall in love with him?"
"WHAT ABOUT NARUTO?! WHAT ABOUT LEE?! WHAT ABOUT SOMEONE NOT OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER YOUR PARENTS BEING KIDS?!"
"The age thing isn't such a big deal, Sasuke. He's so mature and…experienced." She giggled. "It's really great how protective he is. And he…teaches me…things."
"WHAT KIND OF THINGS?!"
"Sex jutsus." She answered, her face now a colour three shades deeper than her hair.
Sasuke couldn't handle this information. He felt pain in his head.
"Sasuke? SASUKE?!" Sakura cried. Sasuke collapsed on his knees, then fell to the rocky ground, cold and still.
…
"The patient died of an aneurysm brought on by shock." Sakura said in a clinical tone of voice as she looked down on her fallen team mate, who was stretched out on a bed. There was no need for a further examination. The last Uchiha would be brought home for burial. Sakura shook her head as she walked out. He could have made a different choice, but he hadn't. Kakashi was waiting for her. She collapsed in his arms. He held her close, lovingly.
"I'm sorry, Sakura."
Sakura hesitated as she pulled away. On some days she just didn't want to leave his embrace.
"He chose the life he chose, Hatake-kun. My shift's over. Wanna go get some ice cream?"
"Sure." They walked out holding hands.
