- As the Waves Come, Let 'em Take us -

Cheng Li found it almost humorous that on the verge of delirium her mind would only focus on the most unnatural thought. She would think that when she went, she would go out fighting, sizzling like a snare, yet here she was; drowning in the ocean she had come to tame, her fire extinguished. It had been a while since she last felt so vulnerable, so free. It had been such a long while. Is this what dying is like?

And still, she couldn't focus her mind on the red pooling out of her wound, that should bring herself to realize the enormity of her state; she was drowning in her own blood.

She couldn't focus her mind on the rich emerald of ever green trees, that should bring memories of her father, that should arouse a sense of longing to live.

Cheng Li was drowning and bleeding in the middle of the ocean, yet all she could think about was the pale blue of Lorcan's eyes. It brought her a sense of relaxation though it shouldn't. What was so special about him that it was his eyes that occupied her mind, even on the verge of dying? She was a Captain, he was a Lieutenant, not even on her own ship. She was a Pirate, he a Nocturnal, made to devour human blood. And she was Cheng Li, ruthless Captain of the Tiger, he was Lorcan Furey; a memory of starry night skies.

And it was for that reason that she let her mind wander on about Lorcan Furey. Beautiful Lorcan Furey.

If only she had her twin katanas, she wouldn't need beautiful Lorcan Furey.

If only she wasn't spilling pools of blood, she wouldn't need beautiful Lorcan Furey.

If only she hadn't been so hasty during the attack, she wouldn't need beautiful Lorcan Furey.

She wouldn't need his gentle eyes to calm the fire behind her own. She wouldn't need to shiver ever so slightly under his formal kiss on her cheek. She wouldn't need to smile every time he cracked a joke with his husky Irish accent.

Cheng Li didn't need Lorcan Furey.

Yet when strong, muscular arms wrapped around her narrow waist and dragged her up to shore, she knew she needed Lorcan Furey.

"Gotcha', Captain. You look like I just told ya' I loved ya'!"

Nonsense.
