Eren woke up to the sight of his childhood friend. She slept so easily, and he continued to gaze at her. He quietly got up and went out in front of his house. The town was quiet at night, yet the sky seemed peaceful. It seemed to be a whole other world, one without cares, one where there were no struggles, where conflicts did not exist, a place, not human. He made his way back in the house.
He thought of a place such as the sky. Thinking of other far away places brought him to think of the outside world. He remembered reading the book with his two closest friends. One of the outside world, beyond the walls, filled with adventure, and discoveries, happiness, almost as luxuries seemingly compared to what they had now. He made his was back, only to see Mikasa's eyes open, and a lantern, lit up, which was not as he left it. She was staring up into the ceiling.
"Is there something wrong Mikasa?" Eren asked, quite quickly, seeing as how late it could be. She was just laying there, not making a sound.
"Eren, do you like this life?" She broke the silence, ending his distress, yet surprised him with the sudden thought provoking question. "Do you think this life is so good, to the point of carrying on and living. Perhaps adequate is better than good." He stared blankly at her, the thoughts swimming through his mind, so hard to keep up with. He thought about the sky. A place where nothing happened. Then he thought about the outside world.
"This life is good. It's good because it has purpose. We, under the circumstances we are in, fight. That's a purpose. If we could live in the clouds, a beautiful place where nothing happened, our lives would have no purpose or meaning. We fight to have things, our lives, the people. Survival. A life full of purpose and struggle is better than a life of nothing. This life isn't fair, but it's better than nothing. Besides, we're only human."
She still laid in silence, but her eyes seemed to be closing. He moved to her, and put his arm under her head, and grabbed the scarf she had never been able to let go of.
"Besides, the greatest purpose in life for me, is to live for you."
