Thanks to canadiandonutsarethesexiest and Li'l Albatross for reviewing two of my other stories. Your reviews mean a lot to me. On with the story. To clear up any confusion, James is eight and Lily is four.
Disclaimer: Sadly, and much to my disappointment, I do not own Harry Potter, as my friends so kindly pointed that out (scowl)
SAFETY
The half-moon hung low in the dark sky which could just be seen through a gap in the curtains. The house was dark and silent. From downstairs a clock chimed two a.m.
A small figure with dark red hair rolled over in her bed. She twitched in her sleep. Her small hand clasped her stuffed Hippogriff toy and she twitched again.
Suddenly her eyes flew open and she took a shaky breath. The dream had been so real. Her chocolate brown eyes followed shadows slink across the ceiling. She began to tremble as details of the dream came back to her.
Dark shadows and whispers had grown to shadowy figures and blood-curling scream. Things had grabbed her and attempted to drag her away and it was when she looked to her left she saw the blood red eyes that glowed and the sharp teeth and claws.
She threw back the blankets and swung her legs out of bed. She shivered slightly when her feet touched the cold floor. She grabbed her Hippogriff toy and, holding him close, crossed the dark room to the door.
She opened it and slowly made peered out at the dim landing. She glanced behind her and at once imagined glowing red eyes watching her from under the bed.
She stifled a scream as her heart leapt to her throat and, taking a deep breath, stumbled onto the landing, closing the door behind her.
She made the mistake of glancing down the stairs to the hall below and could have sworn a shadowy figure duck into the shadows.
She quickly hurried over to her brother's bedroom door, trembling. She turned the handle and opened the door silently.
Her brother was lying in bed, breathing evenly. She closed the door behind her and crossed the room to the bed.
She could just see his untidy black hair above the blankets. She reached up and shook his shoulder.
'James,' she said softly. He mumbled something and rolled over.
She glanced at the door and tricked herself into believing a shadow was on the other side.
She climbed up onto the bed and shook him again, with more force than before.
'James,' she hissed and he opened one hazel eye, blearily.
'Lily?' he asked as he sat up and rubbed his eyes before attempting to stifle a yawn. 'W-what's w-wrong?'
'I had a nightmare,' she said, her voice laced with fear. James looked at her and noticed that she was trembling, pale and her eyes were wide with fear.
'Are you okay?' he asked, his voice soft and his eyes full of concern.
She shook her head and James pulled her into a hug. She shook even worse and a couple of tears escaped her eyes.
James continued to hold her and he ran his fingers through her red hair to calm her down.
Eventually her shakes subsided and she pulled away.
'You okay now?' asked James quietly as he wiped the couple of tears on her face away. She nodded shakily and James pulled the blankets down and pulled her back.
'You can stay here, kay,' he said and he pulled the blankets back up, covering both of them before the creeping cold could smother them.
James wrapped his arms protectively around Lily and she snuggled up to him.
'Go to sleep now,' he whispered. 'Your safe.'
