Family Duties

I do not own the Hunger Games. As great as it would be, I can't write that well. ;-)
Also, in this story, Katniss Everdeen died in the 74th Hunger Games. Cato killed both Katniss and Peeta, and won the Hunger Games.
Chapter One: The Reaping
I woke up early to find my mother sitting in her rocking chair, quietly crying.
"Mom? Are you okay?" I asked her.
She looked up. Her eyes are red and her face is covered in wet trails, blazed by the tears that were streaming down her face.
"Honey, today is your first Reaping Day. They're gonna take you away from me!" My mother continued to cry, this time louder.
"Shhh, mom, it's ok. I'll be fine," I reasurred her.
"Hazel, remember your brothers? They never put their names in more than they had to. But both of them were Reaped! I can't have another child of mine killed in these stupid g-g-games!" At this point, she was sobbing.
"And you won't. My name is only in that bowl once. The odds of me being picked are practicaly impossible!" I called the last part over my shoulder as I left to get ready.
I ran upstairs to my room, where I put on my mom's old dress. I'm pretty tall for my age, so it fit me perfectly. I brushed my hair and put it up in a bun.
After looking in the mirror to make sure my blonde hair went with the fabric of the dress- it did- I slipped on my only nice shoes and left. I tried to say goodbye to my mom, tell her that I would be fine, but she ignored me. We'll make up later, I decided as I walked out the door.
The whole thing was a blur. I can't even remember the name of our new… Reaper? The old one tried to kill the president, so we got a new lady with an even worse idea of "fasion".
I wasn't really paying attention until I heard "Blah, blah, blah, Ladies first!" Better pay attention to the tributes, Hazel, I thought to myself. You don't want to miss someone you know. Our Reaper lady swirlled her hand around in the bowl. She grabbed one, dropped it, grabbed another, dropped it, and finally grabbed one, pulled it up, and read it.
"The female tribute for District 11 is… Hazel Oakwood!"
I promise to write more soon! I won't be able to do much on weekdays, but I'll do what I can! Please read and reply!
