Hope Lupin was worried about her son. He was more withdrawn than ever and she didn't understand why. Of course, it seemed that she didn't understand a lot these days and it wasn't like he told her much anyway. And he rarely visited them anymore. Well, actually it was better to say that his rare visits were even rarer, but she took all she could get; it was her son after all.
Just few months before he had seemed so happy. For the first time in years, Hope had seen her boy happy, smiling; the day he had come and told her he had married that Tonks girl. She was good for him. He had never been that happy, especially not since Sirius had died.
And today. Today he was back to his sad and angry state. She had to talk with him. It hurt her to see him like this. She didn't know what happened, but she would find out soon.
Where did he…? Oh! No!
"Where do you think you're going?" she asked, entering the living room. Her son had his cloak on and was preparing to leave.
"I need to go. They might need me," he said, not looking at her.
"Remus! What's going on?"
"Mum, there's a war going on," he retorted, stepping closer to the door.
"Don't get smart with me, young man! I meant with you! What's going on with you? You are sad and angry, and I can't take it anymore. I see you once in a blue moon; I think I have the right to ask what is going on with my son! A son who married and didn't invite his own parents to the wedding! So, please tell me! How can I help you if won't let me?"
"Perhaps I don't need your help!" snapped Remus, but the instant he said it, he regretted it. And the hurt that showed in his mother's eyes…
This wasn't like him. And she was right. He barely saw them anymore.
"I'm sorry, Mum!" he whispered.
"Remus, what has been been bothering you? What has happened that I need to pry the answer out of you?"
Remus looked down. "Dora is pregnant, Mum," he said, sitting down and putting his face in his hands.
"But, that's wonderful!" she exclaimed. How long she had hoped for a grandchild!
"It is NOT wonderful! It's horrible, can't you see?" Remus shouted, getting up and pacing around the room.
"Remus,..." Hope started
"I shouldn't have married her. I should have thought that…"
"Stop! Remus! Stop!"
"But…., what if he's like me?" he whispered brokenly, crashing to the floor, fear in his eyes.
Hope run to his side and knelt, hugging him. "You don't need to argue with me, Remus. I understand your point, but a child is a miracle nevertheless. He may be like you, but you don't know for sure; you are upset for nothing. There's nothing you can do now; you can't leave her. You love her, right?"
"More than I can say."
"Then don't be afraid. Go to her. Don't leave her alone. A child needs both his mother and father. A family. I've never thought I would see you settle down, but you did. And this girl is perfect for you, I can tell and I've only met her once. She has managed to break the ice wall you've created around yourself ever since…" your friends died.
She didn't say it, but Remus knew how she was going to complete the sentence. He smiled. "Yeah, she did. And you're right, Mum. As always. I'm sorry."
"No need to be, my son," she said and kissed his hair.
