A/N: Rewatching Data Squad. :D And I was thinking how I don't write Data Squad nearly enough. This is the last of the poems for the Prompts in Steps Challenge on the Digimon Fanfiction Challenges Forum (for this take of the challenge anyway; in theory I can do it four times with four different sets of prompts). So this is Step 1 – prompt #09 – problematic.

If anyone was following the challenge, the next stage is stage 2 – 100 word drabbles! Coming soon.

A Game of War

It was a game of war that needed to be played just right,
each piece carving a carefully planned out path;
those little cracks of imperfection were things he could do without
but then the bugs creep in, and the problems really start.

A game of annihilation is easiest played by crushing the weakest first
and gaining power, but in reality the weakest are the first to strike
and the last to fall: to numerous, too inconsequential to care,
just casualties in a flame burning far too hot for them

But sometimes they grew: the opposing pawns that jumped the board
and became queens and troublesome, crumbling his well-made path,
pushing him back – he'd played it wrong after all
but there was nothing to do to fix that, to make them bugs again
so he could crush them underfoot.
