This is completely new territory for me so tell me what you think.
I'm also aware that not all of the historical stuff is correct but I had to make some up after not being able to find anything.
My mum's mum, my grandmother, had been in Bethlem Asylum, the original Bedlam. My mum had named me after her mother which had seemed strange to me because she never really knew her mother. Grandmother Alice was now at dead's door and my mother felt guilty for not seeing her as often as she could have done so took me with her to reconcile. Grandmother Alice had been getting better, she didn't ramble on about her Wonderland like she used to but I suspected it was because of the drugs they were pumping her with to keep her stable.
"Grams?" I asked as I sat down beside her arm chair in the day room.
"Who are you?" she asked, staring at me with her bright green eyes.
"It's Alys. You're granddaughter." I replied, I didn't blame her, it had been months since I had last seen her. To me Alice didn't seem crazy or disturbed in any way, with me she was always a kind old lady who was up to mischief and always painfully honest.
"Of course, how are you? I've missed my favourite granddaughter." She said with a smile, reaching towards me and beginning to plait my long dark hair.
"I'm good, what about you?" I asked.
"Death's door as always." She laughed.
"Knock on the door and run away." I added. The nurse walked towards us with a clip board in her hand.
"Can I take your name please?" she asked.
"Alys Petrova." I replied, the nurse looked at me confused, I spelled it for her and then she walked away.
"Petrova?" my Gran asked.
"Something wrong Gran?" I asked. She looked around and then slipped the ring from her finger and placed it quickly in my hand and looked me seriously in the eye.
"Do not let this out of your sight. It must remain on your finger at all times. It will keep you safe." She rambled, not really making much sense.
"What are you talking about I can't take this." I replied.
"You must. Wonderland must always have an Alice. When I was last there I took this ring. It will keep you safe my dear." My grandmother explained.
