Trout

A young college girl sat at her usual table in the little coffee shop where she always went when she had a lot of work to do. It was Finals Week and she was way behind. "I knew this was a bad idea…" She sighed as she tried to solve the complex equation in front of her. "I shouldn't have taken on so many classes this semester… I'm so done for!"

The middle-aged coffee shop owner had noticed her frequencey to the little coffee shop. He was a loner type and didn't say much to anyone unless he was yelling at them to leave or making snide comments to stupid customers. And, no matter how much he ignored her or made her feel stupid she was always so chipper and always said how wonderful his coffee was and how it was just what she needed to get through the day. But, today she seemed different, upset, stressed. He watched her as she got frustrated and threw her pencil at her books. The pencil bounced off her books, landed on the floor, and rolled about two feet away from her table.

'That's it!' He thought. He went to the counter and got a slice of apple pie, and walked over to her little table, which was covered with books.

"Here!" He said dryly, as he placed the plate with the pie right on top of all her books.

The girl, surpirsed at the sudden halt to her studying, glanced up from the little plate to the shop owner. "What's that?" She asked, a bit agitated.

"You look like you need pie…." He said, stading next to her.

"I do?" She asked, confused.

"Violent pencil tossing usually signals a need for pie." He said.

Then she decided to get smart with him. "What if I had thrown a pen?"

The shop owner smiled inwardly and said in his usual dry tone, "I would have brought you a trout."

"What!?" She was so confused. And she searched his face for an answer.

"Hey, I don't make the rules… I just carry them out." He said with a slight glint of laughter in his eyes. Then he turned and walked back to the counter.

The girl was dumbfounded. She didn't understand what just happened. To her he was the meantest man alive. She looked over to where he stood behind the counter, and she caught his eye. What she saw wasn't the same stone cold man, but someone who cared. She smiled at him and he rolled his eyes and went back to wiping down the counter. 'And then it's gone in a flash….' She thought as she giggled to herself, forgot her school work, and began to enjoy her pie.
