Girl of His Reality
When Ichigo was only five, still cute and cuddly and smiley, he decided that he would marry his mother. She was everything he thought a woman should be like, the very epitome of the perfect female. She was warm, loving and the very center of his universe.
Plus, his dad was a weirdo that absolutely did not deserve to have married such a goddess.
But then he grew older and he realized that it was just not done (a fact pointed out gleefully by the same previously mentioned oddball father), so he decided that he wanted someone like Tatsuki. A girl strong enough that he didn't have to protect like those other cry-babies and weaklings at school. He was starting to cultivate his tough guy image and having a weepy girl was just not in his plans.
But definitely not Tatsuki herself, since he would also like it if he didn't get his ass kicked by his own girl.
Puberty hit though and as his trademark scowl slowly settled on his brow, his attention shifted to girls like Orihime. Girls with long, silky hair and curvaceous figures that just drew the eyes. But since he considered himself more than just another superficial guy, he also wanted someone that he can also talk to. Someone he can connect with. And even though he vaguely had an idea that Orihime herself might actually like him, he just couldn't see her as something more than just a dear friend.
And he could barely follow her runaway train of thoughts to carry out a long, meaningful discussion anyway.
But all his preferences, past and present, didn't seem to matter though. Since what he fell for certainly didn't fit any of his criteria for his perfect woman, his dream girl.
Because even in his wildest dreams, he never would have expected to fall for someone more than ten times his age and less than half his height and body mass, with a quick, sharp tongue and even quicker and sharper right hook.
But fall he did, into those dark, haunted eyes that just broke his heart. That sweet elfin face that smiled so rarely, those small hands that spoke of both frailty and strength.
He realized during that warm, frantic summer, that it doesn't really matter if you never realize your past dreams because some dreams are just not reflective of what you truly wanted anyway. What really matters the most is that you actually embrace your current reality.
Rukia was unquestionably not as beautiful as Orihime but she was someone he can talk to, even without any words needing to be spoken between them. Not nearly as tough and strong as Tatsuki; that's why he protects her, even as she in turn, kicks his ass. She was never as warm and loving as his mother but she was, slowly and surely, becoming the center of his universe.
Yes, Rukia certainly was his reality. And Ichigo knew that he can't help but embrace it whole-heartedly.
end
