Graffiti

I do not own Watchmen.

Daniel, or as he would rather be called, Dan, sees graffiti. He doesn't stop the kids. He just sees, sees the graffiti and watches them.

He grumbles and one of them looks behind himself and drops his spray can. He runs and runs. Dan stands and sees graffiti and remembers someone once telling him something about graffiti and it being bad. Some one should wash that graffiti off the wall.

It is scrawled, red and accusatory, on the wall next to Dan and Laurie's, Dan's wife, house. His house is a nice house and shouldn't be next to graffiti. Dan is a good man and good men don't deal with these things.

Walter would be so…disapproving of Dan now. By Walter he means Rorschach, and by Rorschach he means Walter Kovacs, who is dead. Laurie never much liked Walter. He was a bit biased against her, thinking she was the masked killer. Dan knew she wasn't.

It hurts him inside that he almost wanted to believe Walter, because Walter, Rorschach believed so wholly in his own theories that you almost wished they were true. Rorschach would have killed the kid before they even sprayed a dot on the wall.

Too bad he was dead.

W-A-T-C-H-M-E. That was it. Dan sees the graffiti and knows what they were going to write. Some people still hate them, think they caused all the trouble, all the deaths. He didn't. He's just keeping the secret that did. They forgot the N. It isn't complete.

It isn't complete, but it is. It spells out 'Watch me'.

Watch me, says a three year old doing a cartwheel.

Watch me, says a very sick young man wearing a mask that serves to hide what he sees in the mirror.

Watch me, says a man who is so close to God that he's stopped believing in everything, everything, even love.

Watch me, says the smartest man in the world as he kills half of New York.

Dan sees the graffiti and sees the monsters. He sees them with out goggles. He sees them as Daniel, not as Nite Owl. He sees how foolish they were.

He watches the graffiti, because it asks him to. He watched the destruction and salvation of a million people, because they asked him to. He watched the city, they watched the city, because it asked them to. Watchers. Watchmen.

Watch me, he thinks, watch me walk away. And he goes back inside for dinner.

A.N. Mmmm, just finished Watchmen. Probably will write more for it.
