Lifes Little Lessons

A young boy was searching the mall for the object of his desire. As he turned the corner and entered the next section of the JC Penny he was in. His eyes grew wide with excitement. Thats it! He thought and had to restrain himself from running to the item. Its perfect. He whispered as he clutched it in his hands.
When the boy returned home, he looked to see his father sitting on the couch reading the daily paper. Not saying a word he moved towards the stairs, just wanting to get to the seclusion of his room. The bag he carried making noise as he quickly walked to the stairs.
"How was your day?" His father asked not even looking up from his paper.
The boy paused. "Fine." Was his short reply. Then he continued towards the stairs.
The father, not wanting to give up so easily on getting closer to his son, inquired once more. "What did you do?" He asked glancing up at his son and catching his eyes for a moment before his son turned to ascend the stairs.
Again, not wanting to linger, the boy was short. "Nothing."
The father had had enough. "Now wait a minute." He called, closing his paper and placing it on the coffee table. He stood and turned to his son. The boy stopped halfway up the stairs and hunched his shoulders, but did not face his father. "Everyday, you come home and I ask you how your day was. And, everyday you say fine." The father said with an agitated tone, as he walked towards the stairs. "Everyday, I ask you what you did. And, everyday you say nothing." He stopped at the base of the stairs and looked up to his son, who still had not turned to face him. "Im tired of fine. And, Im tired of nothing. I feel like I dont even know you anymore." His tone growing with agitation, as he spoke. "Now I want to know how your day was, and what you did." The father crossed his arms over his chest and smiled. A sense of pride about him, for he had accomplished what most parents could not. Getting to know his son.
The boy straightened up, turned to his father, and with a wry smile he said plainly. "Father, I have decided to become a girl." Then he pulled a dress from the bag he was carrying.
The father in complete shock turned, walked back to the couch, sat down, opened his paper and said dryly. "Thank you, son, for teaching me a very valuable lesson."
