ichigo watches the sunset and sees that denial is not a river in Egypt
note : must have some basic info of the anime series, spoilers for soul society arc, set anytime after said arc, and no, i do not own bleach (328 words)
Our Horizon
Ichigo sat alone on the river banks, staring moodily at the setting sun. His arms rested upon his up-drawn knees, his school bag flung carelessly at his side.
The horizon loomed vast and wide in front of him; the ultimate illusion. The long, thin line deceptively the only thing that's separating earth and sky, but it was just a lie. Nothing connected the two realms but air. No bridge existed between the two worlds.
Just like no bridge existed between Soul Society and the human domain.
He sighed and continued staring at the view without really seeing it. Instead, in his mind's eye, recent events kept re-playing like a mini-movie, stuck on a certain scene - those moments when they were preparing to leave that damned place.
She had chosen to stay in Soul Society. Fine. That was just fine by him. That's where she belonged anyway. With her weird family and her even weirder friends and fellow shinigamis.
He belonged here, on the human plane of existence. With his family and friends, all the people he loved and cared about. Everyone… except her.
"Shit!" He mumbled in defeat. Who was he trying to kid? He couldn't fight it anymore and denying it made the ache in his heart worse. The loneliness was tearing him apart, the huge gaping hole in his life where she used to be growing bigger and bigger until it felt that it would swallow him whole.
"Ichigo?" Sado called from somewhere above him on the hills, his deep booming voice pulling Ichigo from his thoughts.
"I'm coming, Chad-o," he answered in a weary tone. Grabbing his school bag, he pushed himself to his feet and started walking towards his friend, away from the haunting beauty of the fading sunset.
But he couldn't resist giving it one last look and the sight filled him with a fierce resolve.
Someday, I will find the line where our worlds meet. I will find our horizon, Rukia.
