Never Coming Back

"It's a little disappointing..."

The 10th Division office was shrouded in shadows, silent except for the soft rustling of Rangiku shifting on the sofa. She knew she had dreamt of Gin again because her cheeks were still damp with tears. Brushing the moisture away, she slowly sat up.

She wrapped her arms around her drawn up knees and sighed in disappointment. When awake and in control of herself, she refused to let even the stray thought of her childhood friend cross her mind. But that rigid restrain seem to melt away with sleep. And Gin would step into her dreams as easily as he had done countless times before.

"I really wouldn't have minded being bound..."

But now her dreams were not just the flashes of memory from the time they were still kids. No, those dreams were somehow very soothing to her, reminding her of a different Gin, the one who had saved her a lifetime ago.

Now, she kept dreaming of the last time she saw him upon the plains of the execution grounds. The satisfaction in his eyes when Aizen-taichou's every move had managed to push away numerous attacks, the excited tremble of his hands as they poised above the hilt of his sword... the way his ever-present grin had slipped in that one instant that he had turned to look at her. She felt herself bound to the very memories that seemed to make the cracks in her heart bigger.

"For a little while longer..."

Why had it come to this? She always knew that Gin was keeping secrets from her when they were younger. His frequent disappearances, his absolute silence on all topics personal, his very refusal to share even a bit of himself with anyone... even her. Oh, but how grateful she had been that he even deemed to share just a slice of his time with her whenever he showed up.

"See you… Rangiku..."

Back then, though he just left without telling her where he was going or when he was coming back, fact was, he always came back. That much she could count on. This time, though she knew exactly where he was, she also knew something else that made her eyes burn anew with tears...

"Sorry..."

Because she knew, just knew, that he was never coming back.
