The One Left Behind

She can see the full moon shining brightly, even through the wispy trails of clouds slowly drifting by the dark night sky.

Lying upon her bed in her old room, Rukia reached out her hand towards the window as if to push away those gossamer clouds and get a clearer view of the moon. But with a hopeless sigh, she retracted her hands and curled it tight against her heart instead.

Sleep had eluded her tonight, as it had every night since Ichigo and the others had left Soul Society. She missed him, more than she had thought she would when she decided to stay. But she also knew that this was the right choice for her, however much it seems so wrong to be without him. She still needed to come to terms with all that had happened over the summer and she needed to do that alone.

The many secrets revealed upon that execution grounds were shocking to say the least. The unexpected betrayal of three Captains and the merciless slaughter of the Council was something that was totally unprecedented and the aftershocks will likely ripple through Soul Society for many generations to come.

But selfishly enough, she can't seem to drudge up enough interest to even speculate on reasons behind it all and the backlash that was likely to ensue, even if it had set all of Soul Society abuzz.

Instead, she could only focus on Byakuya-nii-sama's confession of the facts surrounding her adoption into the Kuchiki household. His wife, her sister. Kuchiki Hisana. Somehow it just seemed so wrong. She had no recollection of a sister, and no matter how much she tried, she just can't seem to form any memories of her. That was what was so wrong.

How could she ever forget that she had a sister, even if she hadn't seen her in years or she had been too young to remember even anything at all. Wasn't their bond of blood stronger than any other relationships? They were sisters and that should have said it all.

Hisana had sacrificed so much, even tried to lure their pursuers away from Rukia, left her safe and drew danger to herself to spare Rukia the threat of death or worse. But when she had lost Rukia in that desperate flight, she spent all those years in guilt looking for her, hoping against hope that they would be reunited before her frail health failed her.

But even with Byakuya-nii-sama's far-reaching network of influence and staggering wealth, he could not grant her that one wish. And Hisana had slipped away, leaving Rukia once again. This time, forever.

Though she understands that both occurrences were not of her sister's will, and realised that it was all simply beyond her control, Rukia couldn't help the sharp pang of longing in her heart at the thought of Hisana.

And as the hot tears spilled over, she curled into herself, the little voice in her head crying, How could you leave me, nee-san...?

end
