Castiel wandered into the late night diner with his usual blank face. Soon after he slid into a booth a young waitress in her teens approached with a smile.
"Hi! Can I get you anything?" She asked him cheerfully. The angel allowed his lips a slight twitch into what he hoped was a human grin and requested a cup of coffee and a slice of apple pie.
"Sure. I'll be right back with your coffee."
"Thank you," he replied. True to her word, the waitress, whose name was Carol, did reappear soon and Castiel again thanked her quietly.
He wrapped his fingers around the handle of the cup in a thoughtful manner. He had never had coffee before, but he was going to try it.
"Jimmy," he spoke in his mind to his host. There was no reply.
"Jimmy. Awaken."
"What…Castiel? What's going on? Where are we?" Poor Jimmy was confused. Most of the time he was in a sleep like state as Castiel flew his body from place to place. Quiet moments of clarity like this were rare. He was even more surprised when Castiel allowed him to see through his own eyes.
Jimmy stared at the coffee with the curious angel.
"Why are you getting food? You don't need food…"
"It's for you. Do you like this…cream in your beverage?" The angel asked. Jimmy's mind went blank for a moment. He couldn't remember the last time he had drunk coffee.
"Well?"
"Yes! Yes, I'll have cream!" Jimmy babbled. Coffee….he was going to taste coffee. He watched like a hungry child as Castiel peeled back the top of the cream and poured the contents into the cup.
"Swirl it a bit…" Castiel followed Jimmy's orders and then raised the cup to his lips. Down the coffee went and Jimmy felt it as it slid down his throat. He felt like crying. It burned, but it was coffee. Sweet, wonderful human coffee. He almost did cry when he saw the pie coming towards the table.
"Oh my God…Thank you Cass. Thank you…"
"You like apple pie."
"Yes…My wife…she made the best pie," Jimmy remembered. Castiel nodded as the plate was set down in front of him.
"Will that be all?"
"Yes. Thank you. Just the check please." Castiel took another small sip of the coffee before gulping it down.
"I don't understand the attraction to this," he mused. Jimmy laughed.
"I wouldn't expect you too. Humans have a thing for caffeine. Would you mind having a bit of that pie?"
Castiel took his fork and bit into his pie. Jimmy was sighing at the taste while the angel blinked in surprise.
"What…is in this?" He asked Jimmy.
"Well, it tastes like a lot of sugary syrup, crust, and apples to me."
"Is this goop the syrup? It's-It's delicious!" Castiel exclaimed. Jimmy started to laugh.
"Yes. The goop is the syrup. Have a bit of a sweet tooth huh Cass?"
The two were then quiet as they finished their coffee and enjoyed their apple pie. Jimmy was remembering family dinners and Thanksgiving, while Castiel was wondering how he could get more of the sugary goop.
When the waitress passed by, he ordered two more slices.
"Geez Cass…You're going to make me fat!" Jimmy teased.
"Unlike you Jimmy, I'm making sure this body has plenty of exercise," the angel countered.
"Hey! I worked out three times a week when I could!" Protested Jimmy. Castiel smirked lightly.
"Jimmy, I've been flying this body for about six months. You could stand to lose a little weight."
"So you order two more slices of sugar injected pie…Makes lots of sense."
"You won't get fat. Don't be vain."
"Thank you for the assurances. You know how fussy I am about my figure."
"You're welcome Jimmy. Now here comes our pie."
