She's nothing like any of the clients they've had before. First off, she's the one who seeks them out, who tracks down Leverage Consulting to make them take her case, not them finding a case and then finding the clients. Second, she's barely out of high school and not yet in college, her haunted eyes out of place in her too-young face. Third... well, Nate's not sure if there is a third yet, but there probably will be before this meeting is over. Veronica Mars isn't like any of their other clients, which is why Nate doesn't refuse to listen to her out of hand when she walks into their office and asks for a meeting.
She comes prepared, a file for each member of the team. Nate would be concerned with how she managed to find that much out about them, but he bites his tongue, waiting for her to speak. The rest of the team files in to their conference room, eyes going from their potential client to Nate, full of questions he's not sure he can fully answer yet.
"So, Miss Mars, tell me why you contacted us," Nate begins, leaning forward slightly and giving her a small smile, which she doesn't return. She quietly opens a folder, removes a photograph, and slides it across the table towards them.
"This is Jake Kane, owner of Kane Software," she begins, looking at them and not the photograph. "His daughter Lily, was murdered almost two years ago." Nate nodded, wondering where she was going with this. Almost everybody had heard about the Lily Kane murder and the aftermath, including how Aaron Echolls was currently being tried after new evidence emerged that implicated him and not Abel Koontz. Nate suddenly remembers that the sheriff who had been investigating the murder was named Mars, and he knows that this must be his daughter.
"He covered up evidence, and paid off an innocent man because he ithought/i that his son might be guilty of murdering his sister," Veronica continues, contempt in her voice evident for all to hear. "Fortunately for him, he paid his head of security enough to take the fall, while he sits in his mansion playing dutiful husband and father." She takes a deep breath and continues, pulling out another photo.
"This is former sheriff Don Lamb," she says, pushing another picture forward. "Jake Kane had him elected to the position after he forced a special election. He's corrupt, only interested in power, and generally only does what Kane or any of the other top one percent tells him to do. That was until he tried to go after Jake Kane for obstruction of justice and Kane managed to have him removed as well."
"So, what do you want us to do?" Sophie asks, tapping her finger against the file in front of her. Veronica looks at every single member of the team in the eyes before smiling slowly, a smile Nate soon learns is one that should make anybody with a brain very, very afraid.
"Why, take him down, of course," she says like it's the simplest thing in the world. "And I want in."
