A/N: I wanted to start off a bit slow and gradually ease into this setting, which is why this first chapter is so short. This is my first time writing Steve and Tony but I'm not new to the ship or fandom. I've yet to find myself a beta but I think I'm doing alright on my own. If you are interested in doing so, don't be afraid to contact me on my Tumblr; the link is in my profile.

Sometimes, things didn't always appear as they would seem. That's why Steve's mother always told him to never judge a book by it's cover. Regardless, he still did, considering that some books just looked plain boring. Of course, he did take the phrase into account when meeting new people, especially people who chose to speak to him by their own will. Not many people held very long conversations with Steve unless they were a doctor discussing his medical conditions; even then, it didn't happen very often due to his family's little amount of money.

When Steve met Tony Stark for the first time, all that his mother ever taught him about being polite to strangers seemed to have been forgotten. Steve always tried to be a good person, honestly. That's why he didn't really think how he was acting and speaking towards Stark on the Helicarrier. He was focusing on the situation at hand, and was trying his best to get the job done as quickly and efficiently as possibly. Tony Stark, as it would seem, was doing the complete opposite. It was right to stop him from messing about, was it not?

It was until after the battle in New York did Steve realize what he had done.

Thor nodded off to the rest of the Avengers and returned to Asgard along with Loki. While the Board of Directors were more than unhappy with this decision, there wasn't too much they could do about it without causing a scene. So the Norse god took the tesseract in hand, holding the opposite handle to his brother, and they were gone.

Natasha and Clint made their way back to SHIELD Headquarters, or, so everyone assumed. No matter how close you think you got to a spy, you were never even there to begin with. Both agents made a point to hold out a helping hand to their teammates, because while neither were very keen on trusting anyone aside from their employers, they knew that the job would get done only if they worked together. But when it came down to it, Natasha and Clint were just mirages. They were there, and then they were gone.

Tony invited Bruce to his tower so that the doctor wouldn't have to return to India. Bruce replied,

"While I appreciate the gesture, I don't think it's safe for me in a city like New York. Even if I did decide to stay, I wouldn't want to intrude in your home."

Tony, being the ever stubborn man that he was, argued and insisted until Banner had no choice but to give up.

Stark and Doctor Banner climbed into Tony's Audi to ride back to the still-under-construction-Stark Tower, and the shotgun occupant just hoped he was making the right decision, in which Tony said something along the lines of "please, I'm never wrong".

With that, there was only one Avenger left. Captain America wasn't exactly sure what he'd plan on doing next, as he had not been doing anything before. Thinking that punching bags and sulking turned out to be rather unproductive, Steve climbed onto his motorcycle lent to him by SHIELD and made his way back to his apartment. Maybe he'd catch up on modern times, accept and adjust the world he was unfortunately-or fortunately put into.

Tony and Steve shook hands before departing, so one would assume that nothing was held between the two. But, Steve kept hearing his mother's voice nagging at him in the back of his mind. It was nice remembering how her voice sounded, but he didn't want her telling him something he should have realized on his own weeks ago. That was was what brought him to Stark Tower on this fine evening.
