As an AU Origin story, there aren't many well-known characters.
Eugene ran through the streets, quickly losing the guards.
As an orphan, nobody wanted him around, and nobody wanted to take care of him. Not to mention the strange name that he was left with. Many people thought he was a foreign child because of his name, even though he was clearly one of them.
Eugene messily wrapped a cloth around his head. No one ever took the time to teach him to do it right, so he had to guess. It worked well enough, though. With the remaining cloth, he wrapped around his face, covering his nose and mouth. When he finally secured it, Eugene snuck through the crowd in the market. Eugene was a master of misdirection by now; he had to be in order to survive. No one would give him food, he had to get it himself, however that may be. Eugene knew that stealing was against the law, thats why he learned quickly to not get caught. His baggy pants helped when it came to securing the weeks supplies.
Eugene passed by booths, unnoticed by the merchants, filling his pants with apples, melons, bread, and other goodies. Just as he was feeling full, Eugene spotted a special rarity. This merchant's table was filled with metal items, some that Eugene had never seen before. A very plain lamp caught his eye, despite its simplicity. It appeared abandoned, old but unused.
Out of all the goods he could have taken, the lamp was the only item his fingers even brushed. Looking at it closer, seeing it uncared for, Eugene supposed it wouldn't be missed.
