Scorpius sat in the Gryffindor Common Room, his right leg bouncing uncontrollably. He didn't understand why he was so nervous. The two of them had been best friends since first year. That made nearly five and a half years. Scorpius never used to feel like this. He had loved her, of course, but only in the friendly way. Now, whenever she walked into the same room, he felt his heart pound and his palms begin to sweat. He wanted so badly to wrap his arms around her. He wanted to lean his head on her much lower one and bury his face in her hair. Scorpius was so confused. When did the strong bond of friendship they had, change? It had changed for Scorpius at least. He often pondered, however, if Rose had ever once felt the same way toward him.
….
Rose lay in her bed, gazing into nothingness. She didn't really have anything going through her head but one thought. How? She had been thinking so very much about her relationship with her best friend. Why was she so ultra-aware of him? Why was she so angry when other girls showed interest in him? She should be happy for him, shouldn't she? But even as she lay there, the thought crept into her mind. The uneasy feeling that had lingered in her stomach since the start of 6th year put itself into words.
I want to be with Scorpius.
There. She had let the feeling form itself into a thought. Now it was a tiny glimmer of hope, fragile as porcelain. Rose sat up, crawled out of her bed, and then tried to mentally prepare herself. She half-ran down to the Gryffindor Common Room, eager to say what she was thinking before the moment of bravery passed.
….
Scorpius heard footsteps on the stairwell that ascended to the Girl's Dormitory. He peeked over the back of his armchair. There she was. Rose Weasley. Scorpius stood up, tall and handsome. He felt overwhelmed. For a minute, there was silence. Then Rose, looking dazed, blurted out,
"Scorpius… Can I be your girlfriend?"
Scorpius was taken aback by how bluntly she had asked. Then, he realized what she had said. Involuntarily, he started to chuckle.
"I'm not joking," Rose said, a furious fire behind her eyes.
"No," Scorpius breathed. "I'm laughing because of the fact that I was going to ask you to be my girlfriend anyway. " Scorpius smiled. "You always have to be first… And right… That's one of the many reasons I've fallen for you."
Rose was speechless. She was shocked, but unbelievably happy. Finally accepting the fact that everything was alright, she started to chuckle, also. Soon, the two Gryffindors were roaring with laughter, completely giddy because of the love they felt for one another. They had put their feelings out there and received a wonderful gift in return. They had received each other. The two 6th years, exhausted, embraced the other tightly. It was better than any day dream they had ever had. Bidding a good night to his love, Scorpius plopped onto his bed and sighed. He was so happy.
With a rather wry tone, he thought, "Maybe… Maybe someday our parents will even become friendly. Maybe." That one, joyous thought carried him to sleep. He dreamed of treacle tart, quidditch, and his Rose. He dreamed of utter happiness.
