Chapter 1: The Realization

Staring at herself in the mirror, she could hardly recognize the woman staring back at her with a look of astonishment. Her hair was in soft curls with only a light amount of make-up on; and the dress she was wearing. Oh! The dress! She smiled as she turned to the side, then straight forward again. It was red in color, Gryffindor red. It shaped her body modestly with just a hint of sultry flair. It was a long spaghetti strapped dress with a modest scoop that showed only a little of her cleavage and a slit that traveled up her long leg to her mid-thigh. She finished off the look with silver high heels and silver accented jewelry.

"There," She said to herself, "this will appease Professor McGonagall and her Unity House Pairing." Smiling in triumph she walked to the doors of the Great Hall. The doors were wide open and she could see her friends by the great fireplace, conversing and laughing with each other. Suddenly, she felt very nervous and subconscious of herself.

"Maybe I should go change….no….. yes….um," She spoke aloud to no one in particular.

"Miss Granger you look stunning, just go inside," said a masculine voice. Turning around to see who had complimented her. Hermione Granger was shocked and surprised, secretly and discreetly, she admired the handsome beauty that was Draco Malfoy.

"Um….thank you….I think….um…I'm just gonna…..yeah…" She stuttered and bolted into the Great Hall and quickly walked up to her friends. Throwing a glance over her shoulder, she watched him follow her at a leisurely pace, all the while he's handsome smirk played at his features.

The night unfolded in a whirlwind of reconnecting with old friends, laughing, reminiscing, and a few embarrassing stories. Hermione pleaded with Ron to dance with her at one point, but was promptly shut down. Shrugging, she was simply content to just sit with him. After the war, their relationship had slowly and awkwardly developed. She soon hoped that he would ask her to move in with him, but did not want to rush him. She stayed by his side as the Ministry tried the Death Eaters, and while rebuilding Hogwarts. Slowly though, she noticed that he seemed more and more closed off to her as the days went by. Like now, for example, she was trying to converse with him and all he would do was nod and stare off at something. Or someone, she realized as she followed his gaze. He was watching Lavender Brown. Lavender Brown was an ex-girlfriend of his from back in 6th year. Her eyes widened, how dare he! She simply closed her mouth and walked away. She quickly walked to the doors, as soon as she stepped over the threshold, she bolted to the only place that she had ever felt safe. The Library.

Arriving at the Library, Hermione kicked off her shoes and left them where she pulled them off. Walking along the aisles, she soon found a corner to hide in. Curling in on herself, she let the tears fall.
