ICE CREAMERY
120 EAST 145th STREET
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 30
"Katie, can you get another tub of chocolate ice cream?" the shops owner asked a young girl with blonde plaits.
"Sure thing, Beth." The girl replied, wiping the sweat from her brow as she left the cool front counter for the sweltering kitchen. On her way to the open freezer she passed Renee bickering with her daughter Samantha about the amount of food she had consumed within the last four hours.
"But, mummy, I'm hungry!" the little girl whined.
"You've already had breakfast. Twice. That's enough." Renee answered between flipping omelettes.
"But, mum! The little girls eyes clouded over with tears.
"Fine- Matthew!" Renee screeched for her son.
"Yeah?" said the almost-eighteen-year-old, appearing from around the corner.
"Make your sister an ice cream.
"Sure, what flavour, tubby?" Matt teased as his sister jabbed him hard in the ribs.
Katie chuckled to herself as she reached into the back of the freezer and pulled out the six-litre-tub of Chocolate Lovers. She groaned under the weight of it, muttering to herself about, 'Just because I'm new I get all the damn grunt work,' just as something outside gave a loud clash of metal on metal.
Katie, careful not to crush her fingers, put the ice cream down on a near-by bench top, and followed the noise out through the swinging mesh door to the workers car park beyond. Almost immediately a person grabbed her from behind and pressed a knife to her throat.
"Hello, Katie."
