Prologue:

It was a dark stormy night in the land of the unicorns. No moon, not even the stars were to be seen. A lonesome coppery mare, her mane and tail lashing in the wind, fought against the upcoming snowstorm. She was heavy in foal and knew it would be tonight that it would come tonight. Of that she was sure.

It was her first foal and she was very worried. For she knew not how to raise and care for one. Suddenly she felt a wave of pain collapse over her and she lay down behind a hill, for shelter of the icy wind.

The waves of pain came and went as suddenly as they had begun. Now lay beside her a wet bundle of fur. But the mare was too tired to lick it dry. She let her head fall softly to the ground and fell asleep, never to wake up again…
