Chapter 1
On a very cold and windy night a young colt is born. He struggles to stand but with the help of his mother he finally gets up and jumps around the stall. Two men exit the barn and everything goes silent. All you hear is the colt's faint breathing. Ace finally notices he is alone. Where did his mother go? He whinnied to her but got no reply. Ace paced around his stall. With barely any strength he kicks at the wall but they are no use to a small newborn colt like him. Finally morning comes slowly. The air is bitterly cold and there is still no sign of his mother. A woman walks into the barn; she looks at ace in his empty stall. Ace is then taken outside with the mares that will not accept him. Ace sniffs at a mare and she nips at him and pins her ears as if to say 'Get away from me'. Ace shied away from the big buckskin mare. One mare perked her ears and lifted her head from grazing. Ace realized it was his mother and ran over. His mother didn't seem to realize who her son was and pinned her ears immediately. Ace stopped about 10 ft. away wondering why she wouldn't accept him. Ace walked closer and his mother didn't give in. his mother charged at him and Ace ran away with nothing but fear in his eyes. He looked back at his big scary mother and gave a faint little nicker. 'Why didn't she recognize me?' he asked himself. Ace's mother soon realized who he was but she was too late and was being loaded onto a trailer. The stable hands had to hand feed Ace because his mother was gone and no mare would accept him. Ace didn't grow up to be as big as the other colts. He didn't have a pretty look and he didn't have a lot of muscle. Ace was skiddish and didn't trust most humans. He spooked at almost anything and didn't like his stall so he stayed in his pasture.
