When the Battle of Hogwarts rages outside the castle, Narcissa slips away to the inside. She has a mission to accomplish; an old longing to fulfil. She is careful enough to not be seen by any of the students and the teachers who might yet remain in the school as she quietly makes her way to the Room of Requirement.
There is something she has to find out about herself. She cannot make up her mind, even though her heart is already made up, and so she hopes the Mirror of Erised will tell her at long last. A part of her is loath to find out, but her curiosity overpowers her as she walks into the darkened room.
The Mirror is right there in front of her, and it seems to her as if the silvery surface is beckoning to her. She approaches it slowly, scared of what she might see, even though she thinks she knows what it will be.
As she moves closer, the surface of the mirror ripples and swirls in strange shapes, until it forms an image.
She sees herself, of course. The image of her has a family too, just like her own self. But the man standing next to her is not Lucius Malfoy. It is someone else, someone who she has loved for a long time, yet hidden away in a part of her heart because her duty is to another. It is someone who she can never have, because they tell her he is impure, even though she has seen the purity of his heart. It is someone she must now dight against, because her loyalty to her family is more than her loyalty to herself.
And so, she stares sadly at thr image for a while before turning away from it.
"Toujours pur," she reminds, no, consoles, herself, before quietly walking away with tear filled eyes. As she leaves, the image of Narcissa Black and Remus Lupin fades away into the darkness.
