Couldn't Resist

Mamoru heard the shower running from his bedroom. He was glad they had decided to store emergency for her clothes at his apartment, he'd rather not explain to Kenji why he was returning his only daughter home covered in sweat. Usagi had just defeated a particularly nasty youma who was zapping people's energy through free samples. They were in the middle of their date when the first few mall patrons started to drop. There were those who had much to say about his bubble headed beloved's supposed cowardice but she sprang into action. He had to chuckle at the memory, how Usagi had chided the youma for "betraying the sanctity of free food". I've never seen her defeat anyone so quickly. She really took that personally.

He glanced over at her brooch on his bed, still attached to the sweater she wore on their date. Mamoru let his mind drift back to her enraged shout that afternoon, as she called forth her powers and disguise. Remembered how the light had shined out from her body and she had emerged as a warrior ready to defend free food from the clutches of tyranny. He let his fingers close over the brooch but then he hesitated. Usagi was singing in the shower now so there was no way she would hear this, right?

"Moon Prism Power! Makeup!" he stage whispered, still not sure whether she would hear him or not. Nothing happened.

He tried again a bit louder, emboldened by the volume of her singing, if you could call it that. He loved many things about Usagi; her singing was not one of them. "Moon Prism Power! Makeup!" he thrust the brooch into the air, and crouched, bracing himself. Waiting for something to happen. Waiting for a tingle in his fingertips. For lights and ribbons and an inspirational musical score. For the scene of his orderly bedroom to fade into the sparkling void that Usagi described. He got nothing.

He couldn't decide if he was more disappointed or relieved. Sure, he would have liked for it to have worked, but he wouldn't complain. And he wasn't too sure if the pendant would have customized an outfit for him. His frame wasn't built for a miniskirt.

Mamoru placed the brooch back on the sweater, deciding to be productive while he waited for Usagi. He walked to his night stand and reached for his copy of Pre-Med for Dummies when movement caught his eye. There on the balcony, two and a half feet away, was a slack-jawed Luna. Mamoru blanched before opening the door to the balcony, and was silent as Luna walked in. She hopped up on the bed and they starred at each other in horror, in fascination, in the purest form of embarrassment. And it wasn't until the heard the shower stop that she decided to end his misery.

"We never speak of this again."

"Agreed." He breathed perhaps for the first time since he spotted Luna.

xXx

Usagi stretched across her bed with her English book in front of her.

"Usagi-chan, you're studying on your own?" Luna gasped.

"Yeah, I was thinking that if a I'm going to be queen someday I should at least try to get good grades."

Luna hummed in approval. Maybe there's hope for her after all.

"Besides", Usagi continued with a far of look, "I want to be more mature and sophisticated, like Mamo-chan."

Luna was unusually quiet for the rest of the night.
