This just hit me after watching episode 5.9, "Cold Blood." This scene breaks my heart every time.

Trying

She was trying. She was trying so hard. But the harder she tried the harder it was to concentrate on the details. He was Rory Williams. Her boyfriend. Her fiancé. Her…Rory Williams the nurse...the nurse...the Doctor frantically searched her eyes for a trace of memory, but it was like trying to hold onto the remnants of a happy dream that slowly slipped away as she woke up. She tried to picture his face, but it blurred into the Doctor's.

"I can't!" she sobbed.

"You have to try, Amy," the Doctor said desperately.

She tried desperately too. Rory Williams. Rory Will...Rory w...Rory was her fiancé. She was going to marry Rory. Stupid Rory. Fantastic Rory. Rory...Ror...R...

No. Please. Don't take him away. She couldn't forget him. Not now. Not after everything they had been through. Please, please, please.

She was trying to remember something...something so important. There was a great big thing in her head and she felt she should remember, but she couldn't. There was something she was supposed to do. Nothing was making sense. It was all melding together in confusion. There was a faint voice at the back of her mind. Foreign...yet familiar. There was a face, but it was undistinguishable.

It was as if she had walked into a room and completely forgotten what she was doing there. Like when she knew exactly what she want to say but she couldn't think of the words.

Her chest ached, like something was pressing against her heart. She felt sad. But surely that was just because they had failed to negotiate with the Silurians.

She felt empty. Something was missing and she couldn't quite place her finger on what it was. No...she was just tired...drained of energy. And cold. Ugh...why couldn't the Doctor just have taken her to Rio in the first place? Neither side had won. At least they had escaped with minor loss. Everything had turned out for the best in the end.

Right?

There was sorrow and pity in the Doctor's eyes as he looked at her. He was just sorry she hadn't made the treaty work, but he knew it wasn't her fault. She figured a cuppa might cheer him up.

Images flashed in her mind. A church, ring, a wedding dress. These images felt familiar too. They made her...happy. But didn't they make any sense. Why on earth was she thinking about a wedding? She would never marry. She wasn't the marrying type.

Besides, who could possible compare when the Doctor was around?
