A/N: I have never, ever written for Spencer Reid or the Criminal Minds fandom. I've watched maybe... a half of what I should have? I love the show though and his character fascinates me, even though I probably got him all wrong. This crack!ship came from a tumblr page I happen to follow. I fell in love.
And yes, I know there's a large gap in age.. but, please, it's called fiction for a reason.
Disclaimer: I own nothing.
"Kate was shot," she whispered into the phone. The young redhead was curled up on the couch, staring blankly at the television while her grandmother poured herself a strong drink. Her father was still at the hospital, refusing to leave the detective's side - not that she could really blame him, but she wished that he was there.
"Oh, Lex, I'm so sorry."
The voice on the phone is familiar, a comfort to her as she pulls the cover tighter over her body. Normal teenage girls shouldn't be having this conversation, nor should they be attending funerals where their dad's partner gets shot. But normal had never been a word one could easily associate with Alexis Castle, thanks to her father.
"Don't be sorry, Spence. The doctor said she's going to live."
"You saw it happen, didn't you?"
A strangled laugh escaped her lips as she forced her eyes shut to ignore the tears, her breathing turning heavy. It must have been something in her voice. He had always been so damn good at reading her.
"The bullet went right by my head," she whispered.
"Do you want me to come? I can be ther—"
"You can't just leave work like that," she shook her head even though he couldn't see her. "I'm just being ridiculous." No she wasn't. A bullet had gone right by her head.
"Alexis Grace, a bullet went right by your head. Hotch will understand."
"He doesn't even approve of our relationship," she reminded him quietly.
"He may not but he adores you, if I tell him what happened he will let me go."
She bit her lip as she thought over his proposition. He would easily be able to calm her down. It was something about him.. Something that had drawn her to him since day one. Knowing that she wouldn't be able to think of anything else now, she sighed.
"Okay," she relented. Her dad was going to love this. "How soon can you be here?"
"I'll be on the first flight out," he promised.
She could hear something in the background, reminding her that she had called him at work. Great. Just what they needed.. His co-workers had surely heard the conversation, or at least his side, and would know where he was heading.
Garcia, the FBI's computer tech person, had been the only one who had been accepting of them so far. The rest of his team didn't understand them, though she had to give it to JJ - she was trying. Emily had been, too, before… She shook herself out of her thoughts, knowing that was the last thing she wanted to be thinking about.
"I'll see you soon?" She questioned her voice low and shy.
"As soon as possible," he assured her before the line disconnected.
She sighed as her phone dropped to the couch, her head tilting back as she stared at the ceiling. Her mind was cluttered with images of the last few hours, all blurred with panic. Her stomach twisted as her eyes started to pool with tears, her trembling lip pulled between her teeth. Soon wasn't soon enough.
