A/N: Written for the Mega Prompts Challenge, word prompts #14 – callous.
Leaving Behind the Battlefield
They had to be callous when leaving behind the battlefield. They had to be willing to turn away even when it meant leaving survivors still, leaving drifters.
They were a civilisation. Sometimes, those sacrifices needed to be made.
At other times, rules had to be bent to save them.
Because she was relieved they'd been saved. The light of Sidonia, as she called him, mentally, in her mind. The inheritor of his grandfather's prowess – that great man they'd lost.
Hoshijiro alone they could have sacrificed. But not the light of Sidonia.
And not almost their entire front line.
But that was okay. Though they had to be callous at times they also had to care. To shed tears, to defy restraints and try, try to save…
Otherwise it would be only an empty land they'd saved.
