Jack's heart was breaking. Ianto was gone. The one man he loved more than anything else in the world was gone. It was almost time to take Ianto's body to the church for the funeral, but Jack wanted a few minutes alone with him to say goodbye.
At his request, they had dressed Ianto in his best suit. The one Jack loved to see on him the most. The black one with the gray-blue pinstripes that just matched the color of Ianto's eyes. His tie was the one that Jack got him for his last birthday. With tears streaming hot and stinging down his face, Jack reached into his pocket and pulled out the ring he had planned to give Ianto on their date. He kissed the ring and carefully slipped it onto Ianto's left hand.
Lovingly, he cupped Ianto's cheek and gazed down at his still, sweet face.
"Ianto, my love, Death that have sucked the honey from thy breath, hath had yet no power yet upon thy beauty. Thou aren't conquered. Beauty's ensign is still crimson in thy lips and in thy cheeks. Death's pale flag has not advanced there. Ah Ianto, why are thou yet so fair? Am I to believe that unsubstantial death is amorous, and keeps thee here in dark to be his paramour?"
Tears fell on Ianto's face as Jack leaned down to kiss him. His lips were still soft, but oh! So cold! Jack's heart ached even more as he remembered how sweetly and tenderly Ianto used to kiss him. How his beautiful blue-gray eyes would light up whenever Jack would walk into the room.
Jack gripped the gun he wore tightly. He wanted nothing more than to pull the trigger and end his pain for good. To join Ianto in the afterlife. He knew he could not though. Oh, he could shoot himself over and over again until he ran out of bullets, but he would just keep coming back. Even if he could die, he wouldn't be so cruel to Ianto. Deep in his heart, he knew Ianto would want him to live, to keep on fighting for the greater good.
"Goodbye my love. Remember I will always love you. Ianto, you were the greatest source of happiness in my life and my best comfort. I hope someday, I can be with you again."
Nearly blinded by his own tears, and so deep in his own grief, Jack didn't notice that someone had walked up beside him until he felt a warm hand take his own. It was Gwen. She squeezed his hand reassuringly, trying to comfort him as best she could.
"Do you think he knows how much I love him?"
"Of course he does Jack. I think he always knew. He was just waiting for you to know it yourself."
Gwen patted Ianto's hand, her eyes filling up with tears of her own.
"Goodbye Ianto. You just rest now. I promise to take good care of Jack. We both love you so much."
They turned and walked away, hand in hand. In the end, Jack couldn't go to the funeral. It would just be too hard. He ended up watching from a distance with the Doctor and Martha before the three of them left. As he watched his love being lowered in the ground, he whispered. "Death lays upon you like an untimely frost. Upon the sweetest flower of all the field."
Author's note: So there you have it. I know this doesn't really follow what happens in the show with Ianto's death, but I just didn't think that Jack would just leave Ianto without saying a final goodbye and telling him he loved him. I added the lines from Romeo and Juliet because that's my favorite play and Jack and Ianto remind me so much of Romeo and Juliet. Oh and if you are curious, yes I DID cry while I was writing this.
