This is my first try writing a fully-fleshed out fanfiction! Thanks in advance for reading!
PROLOGUE
In the dead of night, waves of water lapped at the surface of the sand where a dark cat stood. Silverpelt reflected onto the lake ahead, and all was silent until the bushes nearby rustled.
"Well, I'd assumed I would be alone out here," spoke a voice from the bushes, "but apparently not." A lean tortoiseshell cat crept out slowly, their tail swishing with the northern winds.
"Hello there, Poppystar." The darker cat turned to face the other, inching closer as the waves did the same.
"Might I ask what you're doing this far out at this hour?" Poppystar asked, looking past the cat to the lake.
"I could say the same," he replied, tilting his head.
"But that's not your place, is it, Cedarwhisker?" Poppystar continued with a sigh. "If you truly want to know, Goldenleaf spoke with me at sunhigh, and suggested I come out here. Do you have something to do with it?"
"Of course not," Cedarwhisker replied, turning back to face the water. "I just couldn't sleep, I suppose."
"Well, your watching shift is coming up. Wouldn't want all of those kits to die, now would we?" the leader spoke, her tail swishing a bit faster.
"I'm aware, but I'll head back if you wish." Cedarwhisker stood, padding towards Poppystar. As he passed, he turned to face Poppystar. "Stay safe."
"Cedarwhisker."
"I know, I know. I'm gone." With another rustle, Poppystar was alone. Staring back out at the water, Poppystar thought to herself. Why did Goldenleaf ask me to come out here? Did she have a sign from Starclan? Shaking her head, Poppystar stared up at the Silverpelt. She'd never seen the spots glisten so brightly before, and there were more of them than she'd ever be able to count. Poppystar felt a gentle shake, and looked down. The waves were becoming bigger, but Poppystar was confident.
Poppystar walked towards the water to sip it, but noticed the water moved away from her. Another step, and the water inched further back. The lightly-coated cat kept moving forward, and a path began to split in the water. Curiously, she continued, and noticed a spot of darker water just ahead that had not swayed. She moved to it, and leaned down, slowly drinking the water.
Suddenly, a wave of darkness glazed over Poppystar's sight. From it, a red aura began to rise, and thunder cracked. Slowly, shadows of dozens upon dozens of cats stood to face her, and although they were formless, Poppystar could feel the anger of these silhouettes towards her. She turned around to find a smaller silhouette of a cat, and it leaped, roaring, and slashed at Poppystar's throat just as lightning crackled. The light cat looked down slowly, nervously, and saw crimson leaking from her neck. I-I can't breathe... she thought, and began to choke.
"Poppystar? Poppystar?!"
Poppystar awoke to Goldenleaf, pulling her out of the lake, and coughed up some of the salty water.
"Are you insane?! You could've died!" Goldenleaf yowled, lapping frantically at Poppystar to awaken her.
"I..." Poppystar trailed off, looking back at the water. "I think I just did.
