Something was wrong.
Himura Kenshin felt it the moment his foot stepped off the boat and onto the docks at Tokyo Harbor. He just didn't know what was wrong. It wasn't anything he could pinpoint. No strange ki standing out and not the rush of adrenaline of someone looking for a fight but it just felt off. The sounds and sights were familiar but everything from the air to the dust on the ground felt skewed.
Maybe he was crazy from days at sea. He had heard tales of how days at sea changed people-though he doubted he was at sea long enough to be affected. He was supposed to be a week ago. His job has taken extra long and though he had sent a letter- it still made him apprehensive. It was good money but after everything he still hated being away from Kaoru.
Certainly the nightmares Kaoru being kidnapped whilst he was away didn't help but he had tried to take extra precautions before he left- Yahiko had agreed to stay at the dojo until his return. He had also asked multiple people to drop by the dojo more than occasionally just to keep his sanity check. He had even stopped by the police station and let Saitou throw insults at him for an hour- till he begrudgingly agreed to keep an eye on the dojo.
Forcibly shoving, the down to urge to shove everyone out of his way and run to the dojo. Kaoru would just scold him for being too worrisome. After all, he had not received any word of any sort of danger or word to make him think otherwise. Nonetheless, his footsteps sped up as hundreds of different irrational scenarios flitted through his mind. His mind and nightmares let never him stray to that. He could never relive that again- not even in his nightmares.
Hurrying through the gates, he let out a breathe and called out.
"Tadaima!"
Kaoru was not there to meet him. Waiting a moment, he frowned when no one appeared. She always welcomed him home. He knew that his letter had given a few days of estimated arrival but to be honest- given past history she would have spent the days waiting.
A feeling of dread and fear coiled in his stomach. Quickly, he scanned for her ki- then he heard cursing an rapid footsteps- inwardly he smiled of the familiarity.
"Konnichiwa!" Kaoru came rushing out from the back of the dojo with a smile, her long dark hair whipping behind her.
A sense of relief lifted from his shoulders as he watched her approached in a dark green kimono with white flowers. It must have been new he mused idly.
He raised his eyes to meet her smile and when he did Kenshin felt his heart drop. Her eyes were wide and beautiful as he remembered in his dreams- blue like iris's, bright and deep like the evening sky before the stars- and totally devoid of recognition.
She stood expectantly waiting for him to say something. He kept opening his mouth and closing it.
It wasn't possible. Maybe he was delirious. He was still on the boat and delirious.
Kaoru's shifted slightly. Still waiting for him to say smile was still there but it didn't reach her eyes. In fact, they started to show fear. She was afraid of him. She shifted again and Kenshin could tell she was ready to bolt back into the dojo.
Suddenly, a deep voice came through the gate. Her face lit up and gave him a wide berth around him and ran past him. Chills ran down his spine.
No.
This wasn't real.
Slowly, Kenshin turned. He was having a nightmare. He had to be. It wasn't possible. It just wasn't. He bit the inside of his cheek hoping to wake up. He let the coppery taste of blood fill his mouth.
His eyes widened in disbelief.
This wasn't real.
It just wasn't possible.
Green eyes and white hair.
Yukishiro Enishi.
I didn't write too much more than this chapter. I wrote a little more which I guess I'll post.
