When all the excitement of the day is over and Scott has seen Allison, he likes to talk to Stiles. It's a tradition that they've had since they were really small, when they would beg their parents to let them call each other every night. As they got older sometimes it would be text conversations rather than phone conversations (but only very rarely because he likes to hear Stiles because the way he talks always reveals so much more than his words) and then they started having video conversations when they both got computers.

Scott likes those the best, because then he can see Stiles and not just hear him. They've talked practically every night since they first met, only missing a few because of circumstances out of their hands, like being in an area without cell service the time Stiles was dragged camping back when his mom was healthy. It makes both of them antsy when they don't hold their nightly conversations, because it doesn't feel like the day is really over yet.

Stiles has always been Scott's sounding board, his touchstone in the real world, and Scott's always been the more optimistic of the pair, keeping Stiles from drowning in the darkness. Which is somewhat ironic, because everyone thinks Stiles is much smarter than his best friend and that their friendship is uneven, but they don't realize that Stiles needs Scott just as much as Scott needs him, if not even more.

Stiles doesn't do well when he's by himself, too consumed by thoughts that he can't control, that fly by before he can fully comprehend them but always leave a shadow that he refuses to touch, and Scott knows that. Scott might not always understand everything Scott has to say, but he's always willing to listen to what he has to say, which is a lot more than almost anyone else is willing, or able, to do. And he doesn't need Scott to understand; he just needs to get the words out there and to know that someone was listening, that someone really heard him. Because most people don't hear him, or at least they don't listen to him. But Scott does, and while he might not always do what Stiles tells him to or he might ignore what Stiles has told him, it doesn't mean that he didn't hear it.

And Scott needs Stiles to see the darkness, because he might be drowning in it, but he just doesn't notice it. It's only when it's hitting him over the head and direct threats are made to those he loves most that he really notices the darkness that's always been there, always been holding him in. Stiles points that darkness out, makes Scott see it, but he doesn't do just that. He pushes Scott out of the darkness too, makes him so much more than he was before, more than he could have been if he had to do this by himself, without a guiding light. Without Stiles stepping into the darkness to pull him out.

So they talk, every night. Sometimes they talk about mundane things, about school and homework and lacrosse and the newest video games. Other times they talk about the dark and the scary, scary things that lurk in it, just waiting to catch them. Waiting for them to stop talking, stop listening to each other, and just be silent so they can pounce.
