Snow
Josh stepped outside, timid in his movements. His arms were crossed, trying to hold in his heat.
"Come on, Josh! It's not gonna hurt you!" Jill called, already out in the yard. He hesitated. He was already shivering and he hadn't even set one boot in the snow. His hat was pulled down to cover his ears, his gloves tucked under the edge of his sleeves. He even had snow pants on, over two layers of sweat pants. Still, he was freezing. Just looking at the fluffy frozen water piled on the ground (and still falling from the sky, which made him feel very out of place seeing as he was used to rain, not… this demonic-ly cold version of the previously mentioned) made him want to swim back to Africa and stay there, where it was warm.
"I… I don't know about this, Jill!"
"Don't be a baby, Josh! It's just snow!"
"But I hate the cold!" Jill rolled her eyes and scooped up a handful of snow with her un-gloved hands. Josh wanted to know how the hell she did that. He couldn't feel his fingers and he had two pairs of gloves on. "And please don't throw that at me."
She sighed and dropped the half formed snowball. "You're no fun. Come on! I want to be the first you make a snowman with! Please?"
He bit his lip and stepped into the snow. "Fine." He looked around at the snow, clueless. "How…?"
Jill laughed. "Here. I'll show you. First, we need a snowball." She picked up the one she had dropped and packed on the little bit of snow that had stuck. "And roll it around in the snow until you've got a decent sized ball." She did so and stopped when hers was about a foot high. "See?" He nodded. "Now you make one."
He looked down at the snow. "I hate the cold," he thought to himself before he did as she said. His was a bit bigger than hers.
"Okay, role it over here. I've got to put mine on top." He nodded and did was he was told. "And now we make the head…" She picked up a bit of snow and rolled it around a bit before placing it on top of the pile. "There!"
"It's done? I can go inside now?" Josh asked, shivering.
Jill huffed. "No, it's not done. We've got to give him arms and a face!"
"With what?"
She shrugged. "Sticks and stones."
"To break my bones, since I've already been frozen?" he joked.
She chuckled. "No, Josh. Now, help me find his face."
They wandered around the yard, finding small things to use as the snowman's face. They gathered various pebbles and twigs. "Is this enough?" Josh asked. She nodded.
"Yeah. Let's give our creation a face." Josh held his hands out with what he had picked up and Jill added her handful to his so she could pick out what to use. "Let's use this twig for his nose… and these two pebbles for eyes… and the rest for his mouth. There!" She stood back. "How does he look?"
Josh smiled. "He looks good."
"Awesome!" She brushed her hands off and stood back. "I think I saw what we can use for arms, but you'll have to give me a boost up to it." He nodded. She led him to a tree and pointed to a broken branch that was hanging down about a foot out of reach. He locked his hands together and she placed a foot in, reminding them both some of their short time working together in Africa.
She grabbed the end of the branch and he began to lower her. She lost her balance and let go of the branch, on hand going to his shoulder. The end of the small slip up was her standing, having caught her self, and him on his back in the snow.
She clapped her hands over her mouth, trying not to laugh, unsuccessfully. "Oh God." Burst of laughter. "I'm so sorry, Josh!"
He took a deep breath, closing his eyes. "May I go back inside now, Jill?"
She tried to stifle another laugh. "Yeah, Josh. You can."
