The Duty of a Superhero's Wife
Lois knew she really should stop. If she kept doing it, people might get suspicious and begin asking questions. That was the last thing she wanted/needed.
She would always make an excuse to come down to the basement. She needed to check some records or use the copy machine, even get some coffee because everyone knew the basement coffee was the best in all of the Daily Planet building.
Today she didn't have an excuse prepared. She just came down here, hoping that maybe, just maybe, she'd see him there sitting behind his computer, trying his best to look as bumbling as possible.
Three weeks. Three long and impossibly hard weeks. She always avoided explaining to people why he was missing. Someone would ask and she would pretend she felt her phone vibrate and say it was Clark calling.
Lois just stood there, staring at his still empty desk. She didn't want to believe he was gone…
"Lois, what are you doing down here again?"
Lois spun around and saw Cat standing there, waiting for answer. "I was just going-"
"I know, you were going to get coffee. Hey, since you're down here, do you think you could tell me where Clark is? I haven't seen him for a while. Did something happen?"
Lois felt her heart constrict. Yeah, something happened. Clark got stuck in the Phantom Zone and she had no way of knowing if he was all right. There wasn't even any communication for him to tell her a simple 'I'll be back'
"No, nothing happened. Clark's perfectly fine. He just needed some time off." Lois lied perfectly. She forced a smile and pushed down her tears. Not now, not here…
Cat scoffed. "Right, I bet he tripped over something and broke a leg and you're just covering for him." She sat down at her desk, Lois' old one, and started to do her job. "Well, I won't keep you from your coffee any longer. And if Clark did break his leg, I hope he gets better soon."
Lois smiled. "I'll be sure and let him know." She said with a sarcastic bite in her voice.
She walked to the coffee machine and kept an emotionless mask on because she didn't want anyone asking more questions. But even if she did want people asking her questions, she would still have to wear her emotionless mask. She was going to be a superhero's wife. She needed to act like everything was okay in public. She couldn't act like everything was going horribly wrong because her superhero didn't make it home.
It was her duty as the wife of a superhero.
