21. Friends

Rusty finds you on the roof of the Kappa Tau house, and despite the numbing coldness, climbs out the window to join you. You've never actually been afraid of Spitter, but for the first time since he rushed as a freshman, you see him as Casey Cartwright's brother, and suddenly you realize how far down it is to the bottom.

He doesn't say anything as he sits down next to you. It's clear he's going to make you do the talking, which is precisely why you've been avoiding him like the plague for over a week. You take a deep breath, hoping for the best, and preparing for the worst.

"Casey's pregnant."

There's no excuses to follow, no witty comments. You barely managed to keep your voice steady as the words rushed out of your mouth, scared shitless.

You'd hoped for the best, but what you got was the worst. Far worse than anything that you had imagined.

Because all Rusty does is stand up and walk away, sparing you a look of disgust before he heads back through the window. No insults, no violence, no blaming. Just silence.

You don't think your friendship will ever be the same.
